We're just not quite ready to let Harrison Ford go yet, so we move seamlessly from Clear and Present Danger to Air Force One, a roughly contemporaneous movie that could fit very neatly into the Jack Ryan universe, as canonically Jack does become President of the United States, in part for his actions during Clear and Present Danger. I hate knowing so much about these fuckin films.A barely-concealed reaction to the Yugoslavian War, and in particular the Bosnian Genocide, this movie shows the president making a speech in which he promises the US will involve itself at the first sign of humanitarian crisis, rather than waiting for international consensus. This prompts a group of communist revanchists (Led by Gary Oldman) to invade and take control of Air Force One, the president's private plane.

My dad was the lead singer in the scene where the Russian prisoners are singing. Still gets royalty checks of like a few cents every month

Have to admit, your perspective on this movie is giving me some real “are we the baddies?” vibes.

Kerfliggle

Agreed. Sad bit of coincidence there; I know this post was planned well in advance.

You know its a good episode when you laugh so hard you cry at am absolute misunderstanding of idioms

If Air Force One doesn't have an escape pod, why would it be in both this movie AND Big Game (2014)

OvO Hoot

I've seen this movie, but I remember only two scenes. One is when the cell block sings The Internationale, and the other is: "If you give a mouse a cookie..." (Slow zoom, dramatic sting) "...He's gonna want a glass of milk."

Kazakhstan being the final holdout of Soviet revanchism is very funny when you realise that, for four days in 1991, they were the last remaining members of the USSR

Nah, it's a soft-c on Biden's codename because he's a fan of Boston basketball.

The five minute tangent to sort out the phrase "cold cocking" is why I listen to this podcast

Please, don’t leave the Nat Sec/Intelligence theme without doing the Tinker Tailor TV Show. I enjoy the Episodes where you all seem happy to have watched something good/realistic. Maybe it could be the finale for this theme into WW2 or something like that.

I'm actually cry laughing at the bird sound Devon made after stumbling over the outro.

It was interesting seeing this movie analysed "backwards" through the lens of Obama/Bush2. At the time, it was one of those movies very much a product of the Clinton era, Independence Day being another prime example, where for the first time in a generation America had a president who fucked (I refuse to research how that turned out) and movie Presidents suddenly got 20 years younger and heroic.

Oh good, no one has said it yet: Paul Giamatti in Shoot ‘Em Up absolutely qualifies for The Dairy Contemplation Distinction, with honors.

SleepinBelle

has anyone mentioned that there's a Planes 2

Brian Danger Hicks

The feature I really want to know if the Air Force One planes have is the sextant port, since I know that was available on the early 747s and I can definitely imagine some USAF or Secret Service guy saying oh yes we need every possible redundant navigation system

I love how everyone erupts into laughter the moment anyone brings up the Cars universe

a great movie for a future episode would be rebel without a cause, cause a) James Dean contemplates milk pretty hard and b) the whole movie's about masculinity, as well as there being a lot to say about its depiction of gayness and mental illness
