It's the second best trenchcoat action gun martial arts movie about being transgender produced in the early 2000s! And boys, there's a bit of a fucking gap between first and second place in this ranking.

In a world where emotion is outlawed, one man will change everything by learning that it's okay for men to cry sometimes as long as they are still capable of doing fucking sick cool nasty gun kung fu....------

"Bricked up like Erszebet Bathory" - I adore a niche historical reference!

Lauren Shear

Also these sound so goddamn hilarious that now I absolutely must track this movie down. I need to bear witness to this clown shit.

Toastgoblin

Same, I can no longer download KJB episodes to listen to when commuting

Public Universal Foe

I mean to be fair the wildly political art would probably be the first art gone after. Of course they're gonna go after Fahrenheit 451 first, that ones about how what they do is bad. The Mona lisa doesn't say anything about the inherent value of art, why should they rush to destroy it

Peter Paul Rubens' Muse

at time of writing, when you google the word "art" (on firefox mobile anyway), the mona lisa is the third result. the first result is starry night, though, and the second an advertisement for an art theft poster printing company depicting a giant stylized eyeball. i feel like Google and this film being agreed upon what "art" is means something but i don't have a coherent thesis about it beyond nodding along with Alice

I absolutely expected the line “We watched the second best sci-fi dystopia long leather jacket movie about being transgender to come out in the early 2000s” to be followed by “Dark City?” (Technically Dark City was 1998 and The Matrix was 1999 but who cares?)

first comment yay

The Pod is Coming From Inside the Cast!

I love this movie, it's so stupid and so ridiculous but damned if Christian Bale doesn't sell the shit out of it like he always does. That dude is committed.

Alex TwinSpark

I fully agree with Devon about the kids today being scarily right wing. I was a substitute teacher for a while myself and the number of kids who flatly loved the tories and were shockingly homophobic was genuinely terrifying. So many of them spewing off genuine shite they'd clearly heard off parents or tiktok

Cyrus McEnnis

Y'know, if you want to do the full run of sick-nasty trenchcoat movies from the cusp of the 90s transitioning to the 00s, you could do a lot worse than Dark City >.>. Which in turn would set up a viewing of the movie that killed Brandon Lee, The Crow.

Jordyn Clementi

Excuse me Alice your beat drop is "Chicken nuggets... Breastmilk..."

Jae H

*cough* The Matrix was 1999. Though I suppose everyone watched it on the DVD, which did come out in the early 2000s ;-)

Mark Lazarus

Alice might be thinking of the movie Daybreakers

Subspace Jet Witch

Ugh, now I'm just getting horrid flashbacks to Doug Walker saying that The Matrix is just "a Dark City-ripoff with all the deep & subtle symbolism replaced with insultingly condescending Jesus-imagery"

Cyrus McEnnis

And in response all I'd say to Mr. Walker is "No, that's wrong, but even if for the sake of argument we agree that your obviously false and shitflung statement is correct, we can make a couple of assertions. We got 3 amazingly sick-nasty trenchcoat movies that both inspired and were inspired by some fucking amazingly sick-nasty trenchcoats out of it so, you know, bonus. And at least we never had any sequels to the Matrix, because it's a perfect movie that stands alone on it's own merits."

Funny story, My brother named his cat Clerick after Equilibrium back in about 2004.

Kimmie

The feature of large enhancement.

Kentucky Fried Commie

Still love this garbage flick. So glad somebody else has my weird obsession with terrible trench coat movies

verminspeaker

Christian Bale breaks into an art stash and is moved to tears when he finds an mp3 player loaded with 100 gecs tracks

Cate Kneale

Also KJB should then do The 13th Floor and eXistenZ because we were all about the simulations back in 1999.

brodie

The main thesis for the matrix episode should be that it's about 9/11

Michael Kelly

Sad that no one noted that every time the guards get shot, the effect appears to be a vacuum cleaner dust bag exploding.

Miss Norris

The more affecting version of the incinerator scene might be from Daybreakers. The vampire government drags a bunch of feral vampires out into the sunlight by chaining them to a truck and they catch fire, with one of them looking the man who turned her dead in the eye as it happens.

Miss Norris

Yep, I think she's thinking of Daybreakers. I'd love to see them watch that.

Karl Childers

this might be one of those films which is so uncritically embedded in a certain ideology that it ends up highlighting a huge contradiction within that ideology purely by accident -- namely the way anger, pride, and contempt do not seem to be identified as emotions either by anyone in the film or by the filmmakers. as noted in the podcast these are pretty much the total range of feelings endorsed within traditional masculinity, but this being the case i think its possible that the filmmakers literally did not consiser them to be emotions when they set out to make a film about emotions being taboo, because their own experience of socialization never prompted them to think of these as taboo, whereas almost all men are socialized to think of other emotions like love, sadness, etc as taboo. the film does clearly highlight this contradiction but i honestly don't think it's intentional.

Allen

9/11 happens every year

Brian Danger Hicks

I look forward to the Robocop episode so we can find out how many assigned cop at birth jokes can be fit into one podcast

The Pod is Coming From Inside the Cast!

I introduced my wife to Dark City a few months ago, I hadn't watched it for a while either and we enjoyed it. It takes FOREVER to end though.

Amy

speedrunning feeling miserable after hearing the shit about tiktok fascists but i'm gonna become more normal with a tf after this

Jae H

You bastards, you actually made me watch this. And it was bollocks. Like a dark, gritty reboot of The Lego Movie, but in a bad way

Mo Haworth

hey, just so you know, this episode download is coming up as a link rather than a file. can't figure out how to download it.
