When you were talking about depictions of rich people for rich people, you reminded me of Lindsey Ellis's assessment of Rent and the inherent flaws associated with how it presents itself. I'd love if you did a discussion of a similar film just to get your perspective on how directors structure these pieces of media to not alienate the people who bank roll them.

I like Ramiel cause it's a big screaming octahedron that rotates in 4 dimensions and melts mountains. Love me an aggressive platonic solid

Tall Jeff

Portrait of Lana del Grey. Utter nightmare musical.

P.A.L.

Ok, but I'd fucking love a Warren Zevon jukebox musical. I mean "Lawyers, Guns and Money" practically writes a scene itself

William

Good A's lads. By the way, have you noticed you 3 increased the use of the word 'like' by about 300% more than usual? Was that intentional? Looking forward to next podcast!

ThighPaigestess

ayo Devon, i would wholeheartedly reccomend watching Mandy sooner rather than later. it holds the coveted pedestals in my heart of Best Revenge Movie and World's Reddest Movie.

Miss Venom

I hope you guys realize the colors you chose in the “rest of your life question” are the exact colors of the three fairies in Disney’s Sleeping Beauty.

Lay-Tex-Lips

The jukebox musical question has gotten my brain on the idea of a Tool musical and I’m struggling to imagine the 9+ minute dance sequences to songs that change time Signiature multiple times

BayneNothos

Master and Commander is clearly a 9-11 movie. An unknown (The other Captain) and seemingly all powerful enemy (The Acheron) that strikes from the literal shadows (Cloud Banks), attacks merchants (Whalers) and the whole this happens literally on the far side of the world (Iraq and Afghanistan)

Trevor Gilmore

Showgirls +1000000 it's fucking fantastic and was only a flop because Hollywood wasn't able to deal with a sexually confident woman in 1994

JoeNotCharles

Don't recall if I've expounded on Nic Cage here before, but I can always do it again. I really admire his dedication, as an actor. to fully exploring one mode of expression. He gets tagged as the guy who goes over the top with unhinged screaming in every movie, but it's more complex than that: every time he does it, he goes over the top in a completely different way. He manages to convey astonishingly fine nuances of emotion and characterization while doing it at the top of this lungs.

Violet Austerlitz

tbh making a jukebox musical out of music from Philip Glass's various operas would be, if not good, very very interesting

Moray Macdonald

If you'd done Kingsmen like people keep saying in the comments, you'd know that council estate Bond has already been done!

Sammi

God those films have some weird politics, especially The King's Man. Like full on 'Hey. You're joking, right? Tell me you're joking' stuff.

Moray Macdonald

I know right?? Which is exactly why they should do them!

TheWanderingBard

loved to hear Dev giving props to The Fall (2006) - unforgettable visually and a satisfying little emotional tale otherwise. that plus the Speed Racer review lets me dream that my other less-known fave (Bunraku) will make it on the pod sometime. Some all-time Filmmaking Choices in an otherwise fun martial arts popcorn movie.

Victor

istg, Alice, do you ever sleep? Not trying to knock everything Dev and Abi do, but Alice knows só much about só many different topics!? Where do you find the time to watch-read-learn all these thing??? Respect.

Twi

Yooo impossible creatures and age of mythology

Victoriuhhhhhh

"In Judo you can use your opponent's weight against them" that'll be Bond's finishing move in Darren Aronofsky's Bond, Whale edition.

Jakob Lichtenfeld

Big thanks for answering my Q! For the record Alice the martial art you were thinking of is Sambo. Fun fact: it incorporates elements of judo and karate, but these elements were deliberately obscured during the soviet era for cultural reasons. Martial arts tend to be very closely tied to nationalist movements and cultural things like that which I personally find very interesting

Gabe

I am so here for Alice doing bits about the door Kill in The Raid and how no one is acknowledging it, and, just like I would, she keeps doing the bit because, clearly this is a good bit, and other people just haven’t recognized it yet. Woman after my own heart.

hill

100% expected the reading of patrons’ names at the end to be replaced by 30 minutes of Alice listing movies she likes

AaronMk91

I don't know if Alice has heard the story, but because Tom Cruise was an A I was recalling it, so I might as well retell it: But some years ago, Christian Bale was asked where he got his inspiration for portraying Patrick Bateman in American Psycho in an interview. If I am remembering it right he gave two answers (or one, so strike the first option if I misremembering): those were Ronald Reagan and Tom Cruise. In interview he talked about how he watched Tom Cruise go on Oprah or some interview talk show and he remarked about how visibly inhuman Cruise was playing off the crowd and he wondered just what sort of things were going on behind those eyes and smile of his. Then he played Patrick Bateman.

Alex

Who do I have to pay for a “transgender street Lenin” band T-shirt? Size small, thank you.

Claudia Lukies

you mean it won't be called "from russia without notes"?

Adam Roy

No one has to agree with me, I want to see a musical cobbled together with Tom Waits songs, and if I don't say that out loud, I will be haunted by the idea for eternity

Amy

Nothing will match the cosmic horror of the hosts making 'talking to you the viewer' jokes moments before reading out my name for my question, I feel like I've been tazed.

Manuel Kiguel

If Abi enjoys big dramatic stories with big emotions, I have an unusual recommendation: The Yakuza games( or now Like a Dragon games). As a bonus, they also have a ton to say about masculinity.

Scaredyfish

Speaking of David McCallum, I knew him from Sapphire and Steel growing up, another show that should be ridiculous, but he sold that role so well.

Corporal Burpfart

Damnit I really want to know who Abi's "Guy you hate to see" is.

Twi

Whenever the next Q and A comes around remind me to ask them what Star Wars thing (not limited to movies) they would do if they had to pick one

Ooof_uhhh_haah

I guess you can rename yourself to RGB podcast, judging by the 2nd to last answers :)

mira_drgn

i've got a roman nose and it's been a thing i've hated about my face even back before i had any inkling of trans thoughts, so i just want to genuinely thank alice for the reminder that even when you hate a certain trait of your body there are in fact people out there who will like that trait

Nah

- Same bag of tricks every time - But she's very pretty My guess is Aubrey Plaza (if it is, I thought Ingrid Goes West was a real change of pace for her, although I might not be attuned to the acting choices the way Abi is)

Twi

Very belatedly but still suffering psychic damage from the knowledge that there was a British reality show based on "fuck, marry, kill"

Salsa Roja

That was my guess as well. Which is an understandable take but also Aubrey Plaza makes my brain go 💕🥰💖 so it’s hard to agree

OK so I did my homework like the f*cking nerd I am and season 6 Episode 5 of Snog Marry Avoid is in fact a wholesome piece of television purely by accident. It's basically an accidental episode of Queer Eye, except instead of like middle-aged family man running a kitten rescue started by his dead wife, our makeover girl Jo just survived high school undergoing a male puberty, which is honestly about as difficult I'd say. Frankly if I could've had a coming out stylist I'd consider it too. It's very much a reality TV show from early 2010 aimed at teens and young adults; the language is super outdated like to explain what a transgender is, they go "Oh, a Girl trapped in a Boy's body? There's nothing wrong with that, but why do you look like a mideval taven wench?". Also one of the hosts has their voice altered and the play character who is like a style Robot when we thought AI was gonna be like sexy ladies telling us cold facts of life while a Hal 9000 led flickers. She basically she had a really campy phase because she was tired of hiding from bullies and also pretending to be a lad. They keep describing her previous look as "fake" because the straights and the cises still haven't learned what camp is, but one of the cuts they made for YouTube is aggressively like "FAKE GIRL gets a makeUNDER" which HAD ME WORRIED but it was fine. It's kinda fun but it's basically just - trans girl learns she is hot in business casual.

Andrew Dunn

Funny to hear the Tom Cruise roast then the Elizabeth Moss praise. "My Name is Earl" is my favorite scientology project

Australian Estuary Pirate

I'm surprised that during the reality show section nobody mention Taskmaster. I think they'd all do well because they have good lateral thinking and are funny - the two qualities you need for Taskmaster. Also, I love the fact that the dragon character in John Wick 2 was nonverbal and it was a complete non-issue. Not only does nobody belittle her for it, nobody even mentions it. They just sign with her like it's not a big deal.
