G'day battlers, we're almost through this bastard of a year, just a few weeks left to go! Hope you're all managing and doing well, I don't have a whole lot to really discuss right now since I'm trying to take it easy BUT I can give you a bit of a life update!

FINAL CALL for Podcast questions and topics! Since I'm not up to much of anything at all, better to do something productive than literally nothing so let's get a November podcast happening!

Let's try something different this time though... I HAVE A QUESTION FOR YOU!
How do you decide what game to play next when you don't know what you're in the mood for??? Give me your answers with a comment below alongside your own questions and we'll discuss it in the episode!

--------------------------------------

What is Jak doing?) Not fucking much tbh with you and it's driving me up the wall. My goal following Hawktober was to take a break and play some games but I'm just struggling to get in the mood for anything. I played through Saints Row 2 which cured my desire for open world turn your brain off chaos. But the only other thing I've spent any time with is The Sims 3 which I always default too, building my own fully fleshed out worlds from scratch with the advance tools. It's fun but it's also a real trend for my depressive gaming moods over the years and I'd really like to break free and play some different stuff for a change. I have heaps here I really REALLY want to play through but I just can't bring myself to pick something and put it in my system.

One good thing I did do was escape for a week to go stay with family. Last time I stayed at my Mum's place was in August right before I had to switch apartment and get stuck into THPS stuff. So it did me wonders just to get out and walk the dog at the beach, drive around and see some things. Even witnessed a local grocery store break down into a total smoke screen when their security system was mistakenly triggered... that was a bizarre morning. But that's been the extent of my relaxing times lately. Less relaxing than I'd like because all I want is to sit and play some stuff so hopefully... I can get my shit together with some of your suggestions! 😊

Livestreams) For those who missed it, I played a bit of GTA San Andreas on stream the other day. The goal was to test my internet and new setup etc. but unfortunately, the quality was quite inconsistent so I'm afraid that side of SEJ content is just gonna have to wait until I move again and can get good PROPER internet hooked up! It really sucks not being able to stream but it's out of my hands as I've tried everything by this point with what I have at my disposal.

A Multiple Year Fuckaround) So quick bit of backstory: I've danced around the topic of my personal life quite a lot admittedly, especially on the topic of mental health related stuff. The reason I chose not to share is simply because I'm not interested in the stigmatization that comes with all of that and at the end of the day, it's really nobody else's business. However I'm hoping to be one step closer to major revelation on that!
The core reason I don't talk about the stuff in detail publically is because I've been waiting for a complete picture to finally be finished. Since late 2017, I've had so many tests and spoken to so many different doctors etc. diagnosing various things. Don't recall if I've mentioned it before but I am officially OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) and ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) which is fun. Honestly that second one in many ways is a powerful tool if you ask me, though of course, still plenty of shitty aspects to it.

But that only scratches the surface of what I've got going on. Point is, I've finally managed to leap through another hurdle with all of that lately and now I'm just playing a waiting game on my next result which apparently can take "many weeks" 😒 so that's code for early 2021 which is frustrating. So hopefully I can get something before Christmas because I'm sick of getting fucked around by doctors and government forms and being treated like a piece of shit. Well fucking over it!
So my aspiration for when I get that result, which I'm positive will come back with the result I'm looking for. I plan on discussing things and sharing my journey with a lot of stuff because I feel like it could be very beneficial for a lot of people to hear. But I'd like it to also be educational in a very eye opening manner, on what living with some of these conditions is actually like. And that shouldn't be too difficult to convey with some of the evidence I have to share, given I'm always filming videos through my worst times! 🙃

I understand that's still incredibly vague and desperately morbid but like... that's life! Obviously I'm not doing too great right now or I probably wouldn't be having so much trouble just trying to chill with some games. BUT having said that, I am actually doing so SO fucking well compared to where I was at 12 months ago. So please, no fussing because I hate it and once all of this is sorted, we're gonna absolutely kill it in 2021.

--------------------------------------

Closing Thoughts) So that's where Jak is at. No idea what the channel is going to see in December, hopefully I can get 1 or 2 more review episodes out this year but... I need to get my act together and actually PLAY some things for that to happen. Will def keep you all posted. So on that note: Don't forget to drop your questions for the November podcast INCLUDING suggestions on how to pick a game to play next! Very keen to see what people suggest there.

So anyway people until next time, I hope you have a great fucking day. Take it easy peeps!

I honestly have no clue where to begin with games I wanna play (given I have a channel too and figure out if I wanna play the game for it). I just pick what I'm in the mood for. Something relaxing? I guess Animal Crossing. Something to relieve stress? I choose something actiony like Hades or Doom Eternal. Only question I have is, you doing alright, despite 2020 being absolute shit? Nothing else, just a vibe check is all. :)

A common idea is to mix up the genres you are playing, playing a genre back to back can leave you burnt out on games. What also worked well for me was to organize my library/collection in a way that my games library doesnt look to intimidating or overwhelming. Other than those, really, sometimes you just need to give games a break and find something else to do in your time at home (or spend it outdoors). Right now though, I actually have this system going for my steam library where I plug in the names of games that are installed and on my backlog into a randomizer and it picks the game to play for the week. It's been working out quite well.

I tend to just play a bunch of different games in small doses and see which ones I'm in the mood for, kinda similar to how you do game testing. Doesn't always go well though and I often end up wanting to replay something I know I'll like. I recently replayed Spider-Man on the run up to Miles Morales coming out. As for a question, now that the new generation of consoles is here what are some of your highlights of the now precious gen? Are there any games you feel like you missed out on and want to play? While I have all 3 console platforms I've got to say I reckon Sony smashed it this gen. They had so many ridiculously high quality first party single player titles... (Horizon, Spider-Man, Ratchet and Clank, Infamous, Death Stranding... etc...)

Jak, I completely agree with you. I have got Aspergers so I can completely understand what you're going through. In terms of games, maybe either play a game that you havent played for ages and itching to get back to or order a game that people have requested or you havent played and wanted to try out for years. Maybe completing Scaler or any other game testing games you have liked. Or just snap your PS2 disc and console over your knee for the fun of it. I have already placed my questions for the podcast in your last podcast video post

Da Nargh!!

For quite a while now I've had some severe gamer "impotence" and can't be arsed to play most games, especially new ones. The only new games I've thoroughly enjoyed have been remasters (Spyro and MediEvil) and I've had falling out/s with franchises I used to like in their latest entries, them being Borderlands 3; for a less than engaging story and Pitchford's piss poor behaviour towards his company, and Doom Eternal; for being rated 12 year old on fucking cocaine (slow down bitch). I found I had bursts of luck digging through my much older games on the PS1 and Sega, and playing games that are much less open ended or less stressful combat/mechanics actually engaged me. The latest that worked for me was Soul Reaver: Legacy of Kain and I can appreciate that the developers tried hard and made a solid game (ok, some things didn't age too well). Shit, I even nutted out a full playthrough of The Fifth Element which I enjoyed as a kid but back then couldn't get past the 6th level or so without cheats. I can liken this game funk to another hobby gone awry. Since owning my second I gained a passion for cars and managed to teach myself a heap. Come many years and many more cars later I pursued a career as a mechanic and after many knockbacks for apprenticeships for not being a smiling fresh graduate from school ( yeah depressions an absolute urod) I managed to get an entry level position at an engine rebuilding workshop. 2 years later I'm pretty solid at my trade but I avoid working on my own cars like I used to. I guess when you turn your hobby into a job it can really suck the flavour out.

To be honest, I usually look over my library a good 3 times, get frustrated, and end up playing nothing at all. Or I play it safe and play something I've already played to death.

Take your time and do what feels right! It's amazing how you can get such a clear perspective on a situation when you step away from it. You seem to be on the right path Rock Princess! Draw strength from your awesome community when you need it. We here for you!

When I'm between games and have no idea what to play I usually load up a game like Enter the Gungeon. It's one of those quick 'pop in and out' type of games so I can just play it for a bit without having to start something that will take a huge time investment. Other than that, I like to play a some short indie games in my backlog. However, there are lots of times where I just look at my library for a long time and can't decide on anything, I think that's a condition that a lot of gamers experience. Anyway podcast question: I can't remember if I've asked this before but here goes... How important do you think it is try to be completely objective while you are reviewing a game and how do you distinguish between a game that is good objectively versus a game that isn't that good but you still enjoyed it subjectively? As always, keep up the great work Jak and please try not to completely swamp yourself with work!

Since I was put on furlough back in April, I had a lot of time on my hands to play games if I wanted. Honestly, for the 5 months it lasted (which I didn’t think it would last that long), I balanced my time by doing important jobs, learning stuff, exercising, and playing games. In most cases, the amount of gaming I did was about the same as if I was not on furlough, with some exceptions where I dedicated more time. Sadly, the gits made me redundant in September (using the virus as an excuse), which meant I had to go job hunting. It killed the mood to play games, and my current time with Crash 4 wasn’t fun. Plus, the appeal of having more time off wasn’t fun. Thankfully I do have a job now, and that has cheered me up! Hoping to give Crash 4 another go! But to answer your question on how I pick which games to play can depend on a few things. Sometimes certain events happen that give me the urge to go and play a relevant game. The Super Mario All-Stars 3D Collection came out on the Switch recently, and my brother and I were playing Super Mario 64 (thanks to another lockdown, that playthrough is on hold…). This gave me the urge to play Super Mario 64 DS on the Nintendo DS (Virtual Console on the Wii U), and I’m having a blast with it! Other times I may see a cheap game that I remember having a good time with. It’s great because you haven’t paid much for it, and you are having a blast. Someone was selling Sonic Forces (Xbox One) at a Year Sale for £2, so of course I bought it (keeping in mind I already have the Switch version), installed it, and wonder why people hate this game (I know the reasons, it’s because Sonic fans like to bitch :P). Usually if it’s a game I want to play by myself, I usually stick with the games I am familiar with, and games that I enjoy. I wouldn’t go and play The Powerpuff Girls: Relish Rampage, unless I want to torture myself. Games that take a long time to complete, I usually dedicate so many hours a day to play. I find it’s best to focus on that game, otherwise you might have trouble returning to that point/remember what you did. Sonic Heroes on the GameCube (I like Sonic games if you can’t tell) I dedicated a week to beat, as I remembered that game being really awesome! I enjoyed it so much I went back and aimed to beat the Japanese version as well (basically this has Japanese voices instead of English). Games that are best in short bursts, I play when time is precious. Games like Super Monkey Ball are great for this. A lot of retro games are good for this well, providing I know what I’m doing. For portable games where playing on the TV isn’t possible, I usually play when I’m travelling, go on holiday, visiting other people’s houses (like when I stay over at my parents’ house) etc. It depends on the amount of time I have on what games I pick to play. Sonic Battle (GBA) was a great one, as you have quick matches and save any time. For games where I can lay in my bed, I play at night-time. The Phoenix Wright games make excellent bedtime reading! This maybe tricky for some people, but I find if the console is set up/output a decent image, you are more likely to play that game. I’m currently in the process of doing this for setup (in the living room and in my bedroom), but since my Xbox 360 is now connected, I have been playing games that aren’t available on the Xbox One like Afterburner Climax and Trouble Shooter Witches. I need to buy a S-Video to HDMI converter so I can start playing more N64 games.

Question: How do you feel about consoles not using Memory Cards? Is this a good thing?
