Another bonus midweek tutorial! This week it is this pretty winter northern lights painting. This is a really simple technique to paint the northern lights, and you can use as a painting on it's own, as well as for backgrounds of animal and landscape paintings.

I have used three colours for the lights to show you what each one looks like, but you don't have to use all three, this technique will work with just pink or green or aqua too!

Supplies:

  • Liquitex acrylic paints - prussian blue, medium magenta, fluorescent pink, bright green aqua, lime green, titanium white, mars black

  • Paintbrushes - Large wide brush (background), medium filbert (for lights), extra large wide brush (to blend the lights), fan (splatters), small filbert (trees)

  • I used an 8"x8" canvas for this tutorial

Tip - The paints need to stay wet to create the effect of the lights, so if you have a slow dry medium that would help! Otherwise just use some water and work quite quickly :)
