Hey everyone! A quick and simple tutorial this week - how to paint a moon πŸŒ•

This is a great technique to learn as it's nice and easy and it's perfect for adding interest to a night sky painting. I've used this technique to add moons to the backgrounds of wolf paintings, and it is great for any painting that has the night sky in the background.

Supplies used:

  • I used Liquitex basics acrylic paints, but as long as you use similar colours (dark blue, mid blue, light blue and white) then any acrylic paints will work. The exact colours I used were: prussian blue, primary blue, light blue permanent and titanium white.

  • Painting surface - for this tutorial I used my sketchbook, but any painting surface (canvas, wood etc.) will work!

  • Circular object - any round object that you can find, just make sure it is the size that you'd like your moon to be. I used a bowl, other things you can use could be: a reel of tape, a jar, plate, mug etc.

  • Pencil - to draw around your circle

  • Paintbrushes - Wide flat (to paint the background), blending brush or sponge (to blend the background paints), fan brush (splatters), medium filbert brush or similar (moon)

Let me know if you have any questions!
