A quick and simple tutorial showing you how to paint this pretty galaxy background! This is a great painting to practice different techniques and materials, including sponge blending and paint splatters!

Supplies used:

  • Liquitex acrylic paints - prussian blue, deep violet, brilliant blue, brilliant purple, medium magenta, titanium white (don't worry if you don't have these exact colours, just choose some similar shades!)

  • Large(ish) paintbrush (to add the paint to the canvas), sponge (to blend the paints), small/medium filbert paintbrush (details), fan brush (splatters), small fine pointed brush (star details)

  • I used a page in my sketchbook which is approximately 8"x8", but this technique will work on any size canvas

Detailed tutorial showing you my paint splatter technique: https://youtu.be/Yhnk3Emik9M

Any questions just let me know!

Hi! My kitchen sponge lifted colors off of the canvas. It also didn’t really blend as much as it made patterns on the paint as well. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Oh no how annoying! That hasn't happened to me before, but I imagine it could be the texture of the sponge? You could try with a makeup blending sponge or something similar that is a bit softer. Or alternatively you could use a paintbrush. I'll add a link to a video below where I show three different blending techniques, the two with the brushes will work if you can't use a sponge. I think the swirly technique would look really good for a galaxy painting! https://youtu.be/nybo6wu6kro I hope this works! Let me know if there's any other problems x

Thanks Rachel. Honestly I think I need some very basic 101 tips because I love painting, but seeing the texture of the canvas in areas where I thought I was doing every thing right is taking me out of the experience! I watched your shorts on blending and how to get a smooth surface (I used gesso as a base on my canvas) but I could use some very basics like how much to paint on the brush and how to know you don’t have to keep smoothing it out…it can just dry as is, you know? Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated!

Yes of course, that's a great idea. I'll try to get a video made on this early in the new year 😊 If you think of anything else you'd like included just let me know! ❤️
