In this tutorial, we’ll be painting the first two moths in this colourful piece (the other two will be covered in the next video, coming soon!). I’ve had quite a few requests for tutorials on different types of moths, and I’ve always loved paintings filled with lots of colourful moths, so I thought it would be fun to bring them all together in one painting.

Each moth features a different wing position and pattern, so you can use these techniques to paint any moth you like, and feel free to experiment with your own colour choices!

Supplies used:

  • Liquitex acrylic paints - titanium white, primary yellow, cadmium medium yellow, cadmium orange, pyrolle red, red oxide, burnt umber, yellow oxide, mars black, medium magenta, brilliant purple, deep violet, quinacridone magenta, ultramarine blue, prussian blue. (I also used a coral shade from another brand, but you can mix this yourself using red and white).

  • Paintbrushes - medium pointed, small pointed, thin slanted

  • I'm working in my 8"x 8" sketchbook, but this painting can be done on canvases of any size!

  • Reference images and line drawings are attached
