I'm making my way through all of your lovely requests, and today's tutorial is this colourful dolphin. I decided on a sunset theme for this painting to make it extra vibrant!

Supplies used:

  • Liquitex acrylic paints: titanium white, primary yellow, yellow medium, cadmium orange, medium magenta, fluorescent pink, brilliant purple, deep violet, ultramarine blue, prussian blue, light blue permanent, mars black

  • Paintbrushes: small/medium filbert, medium wide flat, small pointed, fine detail brush, fan brush (for splatters)

  • Paper towel (optional: for splashes)

  • Reference image and line drawing are attached to this post

I hope you enjoy painting this! 🐬

Rachel, I'm working on this and I forgot to gesso my canvas. Is there anything I can do? I didn't realize how much it helps with the pinholes.

I find that making the paints a bit more fluid can help with the little white holes (either add some water or a medium like flow or slow dry mediums). This can help the paint fall into the holes. If there's any areas of the canvas that you haven't painted yet you can add a wash of colour with watered down paint, this should then fill them with colour so that they're not white when they show through. Other than that, adding more layers of paint will help. Or adding thicker amounts of paint. It can be a pain as it will take a bit longer but they should eventually get covered! 😊

Thank you Rachel, it worked well!
