Hey! I've created this tutorial showing you how I paint shiny fur. I used to always find shiny fur the hardest to paint, so I spent a lot of time experimenting to try to find the best way to do it. This technique is easy to do and its really effective in getting that shiny look!

Hope you like it, let me know if you have any questions :)

How to Paint Shiny Fur (full length tutorial)

Ooooo lots of questions. When you start the second layer with the fur texture you explain what you are about to do. I’ve listened to it twice but it’s to fast for me to take in. It might be helpful to continue with the voice over for a bit longer and explain what you are doing as you are doing it. That would help the slow learners like me. Towards the end of the video, you seem to be doing something in the dark area. It almost looks like you are using a red from your palette. Maybe I missed a voice over for this but I’m not sure what you are doing. Lastly the reference photo looks to have a blue shine but I didn’t hear you say to use blue for the fur texture.

Ah sorry, I'm still getting used to doing the voiceovers haha! Thank you for the feedback I will try to explain for longer/in more detail next time. So for the second layer I basically flick the brush in the direction of the fur to create the fur texture (if that makes sense?). Sticking to the same colours from the previous layer, but using shadow/mid/highlight tones for each of the sections. Hmm that's strange I'm definitely not using red! Could it maybe be the red tone from my hand reflecting in the black paint? I'll have a watch of the video now to see if I can see the bit you mean. In the dark areas I only used black/dark grey paint. I added a little bit of blue to all of the shades of grey that I was using. I think it looked more blue when I photographed it as it was different lighting. Adding a little bit of light blue to the shiny part will look good and help it look shiny! But I'd probably only do this with black fur, (if its golden/brown fur for example the blue might mix with the yellow tones and make it look a bit green!) I hope this helps! Sorry it wasn't too clear x

Ha no can’t have green fur. So the same three colours that has already been used to do the dog .... are used again to create the fur?

Rachel Froud Art

Yeah! So stick to the same three colours/sections, but in each section use three different shades (dark, mid and light). So for the dark section use black, dark grey and mid grey. For the midtone section use dark grey, mid grey and light grey. And for the light section use mid grey, light grey and white. So that you can create highlights and shadows within each section to create the fur texture/depth. if that makes sense? Sorry it’s a bit hard to explain!

Ellen Bothwick

I think it does. So in total you are using black, dark grey, mid grey, light grey and white? I think talking it through as you are doing it would help best.

Rachel Froud Art

Yeah that’s right! Ok thank you for the feedback! I’ll do this going forward 😊

Ellen Bothwick

Thank you Rachel. I’m looking forward to trying this out. I do lots of dogs so this should help a lot.

Ellen Bothwick

Ooo one last thing - I promise- can you post the final finished picture so I can use it as a reference please.

Rachel Froud Art

Yes of course! I have attached the finished painting as well as a reference photo to the original post :)

Ellen Bothwick

Perfect thank you. Well done in finding out how to post pictures too. 😊. Have a lovely day. X

Rachel Froud Art

Yeah I didn’t realise I could attach photos to the posts. I’ll try to add reference images to the videos from now on. Thanks! You too 😊 x

Glad you can now. You are new to Patreon you will be on auto pilot with it all soon. I’ve been on here for a year now so can help by letting you know what others do. Lisa Watkins and Bonney Snowden run two of the biggest accounts on here thousands of followers. I was with them for most of last year. They don’t want loads of questions as it would be unmanageable So they are very proactive to minimise it. I think their Facebook patreon page where students post their work is inspiring to new students. I think students feel safe to post there. I haven’t posted my giraffe though I’m really pleased with it, because it’s a copy of another artist work. But I would post it on a students page.

Rachel Froud Art

Thank you so much that's so kind of you! Yes I have seen them they are amazing artists. Yeah that is a great idea I will definitely start up a Facebook group soon :)

Laura Alejandra

Hola. Tendrás algún video de un perrito completo? Graciad

Rachel Froud Art

Hi Laura, I don't have a video of me painting a whole dog at the moment. However next time I am painting a dog portrait I will make sure I film it to make a tutorial :)
