Hey! This is the full length video showing you how I painted this cute alpaca. I really love painting alpacas, their expressions are always so funny. I hope you enjoy painting it too :)

If you have any questions at all just let me know!

Materials used:

Paints: Liquitex acrylic paints
(Background - titanium white, bright aqua green, turquoise blue)
(alpaca - titanium white, yellow light hansa, cadmium yellow medium, cadmium orange, red oxide, raw sienna, burnt umber, mars black)
(eyes - mars black, light blue permanent, titanium white)

Canvas: Winsor and Newton 11x14 inch canvas

Mediums: Liquitex heavy body gel medium. I used this for the second layer of the background and the second layer of the alpaca to create more texture and body in the paints. I mix a small amount into the paints on my palette.

I have attached a finished photo of the painting as well as the reference photo I used (I didn't copy the reference photo exactly, but it helped me to figure out the proportions, composition etc.)

You don't explain what you are doing?😊

Sandra Duvivier

Will you be explaining more in the other videos?

Rachel Froud Art

Hi Sandra! Sorry for the late reply. Yes I will be. I wanted to get this one uploaded quickly as I knew there had been a wait so I edited it without a voiceover. I might come back and edit it again with a voiceover, but that wont be for a few months. I'll explain more what I'm doing when I upload the other videos :)

This is listed as a tutorial?? I signed up specifically to do this painting and disappointed to note it's just watching you paint. ....quite deceptive 🥺

Rachel Froud Art

Hi Elle, so sorry about this. I edited the video quickly so I could get it uploaded faster, but I can redo this with a voiceover if you’d like? I can do this next week when I’m editing my other videos. Sorry again, I didn’t mean to deceive anyone.

I love this one! I need to get some heavy body gel medium. What type of brush do you use for the background and the other parts of the painting?

Rachel Froud Art

Thank you! Yes I love it, and it lasts for ages too, I have a big tub and it's lasted for over a year. Usually for the background I'll use a wide flat brush, if I'm painting fur I'll usually use a large(ish) pointed brush, for eyes I'll use a smaller rounded brush for the details. I find the best thing to do is to get a brush set with a range of different brushes and if something isn't working then you can switch the brush to something else and that usually helps :)

I finally tried this one! It came out OK. I had fun.

So glad you enjoyed it! I love painting alpacas. I’m thinking of painting another one soon with my new setup so I can make a much more detailed step by step tutorial 🥰

Im having a hard time getting differentiation between the back ground colours, i love your different shades of turquoise but mine is coming out basically the same shade. Just wondering if you have any advice?

Rachel Froud Art

Yes of course! I’m not sure which paint colours you’re using, but if you have your main turquoise colour, try mixing up a darker and lighter version of this. So to make it darker mix in some darker shades of blue and green (or darker turquoise/teal). And to make it lighter mix in some white. I hope this helps 😊
