Hey Patrons! We are hoping to cover a couple of horror movies during the month of October. Last year, we did Joe Dante's Matinee & we had plans to discuss Bram Stoker's Dracula as well but we couldn't fit it in. Do you think that movie is worth covering still? We'd love to hear your thoughts and some more of your suggestions for horror flicks that deserve second looks. Let us know!

Vamp (1986) - This is an underrated horror-comedy that’s if you combined After Hours with a vampire movie. It’s also very stylish and has a lot of great character actors in it.

Akio O'Callaghan

Jack's Back. Off the wall slasher directed by Rowdy Herrington starring prime James Spader in a dual role opposite Robert Picardo. Goes absolutely off the rails and I really like the script. I think it's up on YouTube last I checked.

1986 was a great year for Horror Comedy, TCM 2, Friday the 13th part 6, Critters, Troll, etc etc

JokersJuicyAss

Maximum Overdrive, it's maybe a bit too serious, it is still enjoyable in a very dumb way, plus you don't have to watch any movies beforehand because this was Stephen's only film

Daniel Ellis

Not an almost cult classic but a sidetracks idea, the late 2000s horror remake boom that happened(my bloody valentine, friday the 13th, fright night etc...) it would be fun to hear yr takes on it

Tman

You should talk about Transylvania 6-5000. A movie full of potential but ultimately falls flat.

How about "Monster Squad" ? A favorite of mine but lost in the dust behind "Goonies" as far as kids on an adventure flicks. Cult favorites Tom Noonan and Jonathan Gries as 2 of the titled monsters. Definitely worth a mention as far as almost cult fright flicks !

Jamie Williams

Spoken to Joe about this but Exorcist II: The Heretic is the exact kind of horror trainwreck destined to be tackled by y'all.

Betty Hill

Okay so it's not a horror movie but it has two characters who are obsessed with horror movie effects and makeup and features one scene that is the perfect ode to gory, campy, horror movies. It's called Summer School from 1987 and it's one of my favorites! Its directed by Carl Reiner and all in all is just a really fun 80s comedy that has some great horror allusions, but came out the same weekend as Lost Boys so not too many people saw it.

I would recommend Space Invaders from 1990. It's pretty underrated, in my opinion. It also takes place on Halloween, so it's perfect for the holiday. Other than that I'd also recommend Stay Tuned from 1992, although I think if I remember correctly Joe acknowledged it in one of the previous podcasts and seemed hesitant to talk about it. I could be remembering wrong though.

I remember really liking May (2002) when I saw it years ago but I feel like I never hear about it now. Had an incredibly good final shot that brought the whole film together.

Heath Chamerski

I’d love to hear you guys talk about Nightbreed (1990) - such an underrated horror flick directed by Clive Barker - a non-horror suggestion I’d love to hear is The Hard Way (1991) - one of my all time favourite films but nobody ever talks about it.

Pete

No original ideas myself, but I want to throw my weight behind others in this thread who have mentioned 'Monster Squad' or 'Nightbreed'. Nightbreed especially is an interesting one to talk about, as once again it's a film with which the studio interfered with, flopped and had no idea how to market. Also Clive Barker has a pretty interesting career/filmography to talk about.

Weirdproq

I just remembered Shock Treatment. That's another movie I'd recommend, even if it's only semi-horror.

Brett Lawrence

Return of the Living Dead Part II (1988). The original “Return” is a tough act to follow, but this sequel has a lot of fun moments. Plus, there are two returning lead actors from the first film in new leading roles for this installment, and somehow it works. Don’t expect a film as groundbreaking as Part I, but I truly think this one deserves a second viewing. Just make sure to watch the version with the correct (original) soundtrack. Happy Fall to all.

Jamie Williams

I'd also add Deliverance to the suggestion pile. Yes it was a big hit, nominated for major awards and iconic in its own right (It turned Burt Reynolds into a movie star). Under no terms does it fit under being an Almost Cult Classic or a Forgotten Failure. But it's lost to time how Deliverance is a HORROR film, first and foremost. Always amazed me how this was placed in the Drama section at the video stores when it belonged in the Horror aisle.

Something Horror/ Halloween themed that I think would be perfect for Almost Cult classics would be Idle Hands from 1999. It’s a teen horror comedy staring Devon Sawa a year before he would be in Final Destination. It also has Seth Green, Jessica Alba, and Vivica A Fox in supporting roles. Highly recommend to all!

I just remembered two more horror movies I can recommend: Arachnophobia, and Small Soldiers.

Weirdproq

I just remembered one more. I recommend Something Wicked This Way Comes. It deserves more attention.

Another one the 2005 Dukes of Hazzard film

Also, I was going through the Wikipedia and I found this award show known as the Stinkers, they're basically a B list Razzies, and my god they has some of the worst takes you have ever seen, even worse than the Razzies, example and that get your blood boiling, their pick for the worst film of 1987, I'm not going to say what it is, I don't want to spoil the surprise
