TLDR

Since 2020 Onwards, there is a significant increase in expenditure on food away from home, surpassing the expenditure on food at home. By the way, eating out has become more nasty over time.... I find it extremely difficult to find a restaurant with cooking as good as mine and I am no chef!!!!

Details

Americans spent a massive ~$17 trillion on food in 2023, the most ever recorded in a single year.

Since 2020, food at home and away-from-home expenditures have soared $5 trillion, or ~35% as high inflation hit the country.

At the same time, fast food prices have increased by 31%.

Over the last 10 years, most fast food price increases have exceeded inflation with prices at McDonalds, $MCD, DOUBLING.

Meanwhile, 78% of US consumers view fast food as a luxury due to high prices.

Food inflation is a major problem for most Americans.

My wife is a proper foodie, so she's very good at finding good restaurants that don't break the bank. However we only go out for a meal once a quarter as a special treat. She's a great cook, especially Asian food and has taught me well so that we can share the chore. My thing is cooking Italian food so we have a decent balance, and we only buy good quality ingredients. We've made it a bit of a competition to see who can find the best bargain, it's amazing what you can find on the discounted shelf if you time it right. We also do batch cooking once a week to ensure we have decent ingredients ready to knock a meal up quick after work. It saves a small fortune, however we avoid cheap meat, that's a false economy. We're very lucky to have a local farm shop / butchers, you can even meet the animals which helps with respecting what you're eating. Due to this we have reduced our meat intake and balance our meals between veggie, fish and meat over the week.

That's because the inflation numbers are purposefully understated. It takes time for people's habits to change, but they will.

Food - ‘any nutritious substance that people or animals eat or drink or that plants absorb in order to maintain life and growth’ ….. most takeaway can’t be classified as food - processed gunk that human put in their mouths.

We’re lucky to have a couple high quality, low-cost restaurants nearby (US - Mid west) and nice for my wife & I to get out once in a while & not have to cook : ).

You should check out seaspiracy. You may have second thoughts on that fish intake. 🙁

This is not a figure of eat-out expenditure. That would be too much effort for the average American. This represents the damage caused by modern laziness technology. Thank you UBER, DOORDASH, DELIVEROO & co... And if the price has gone up 35%, guess what, that's exactly the cut these giants are squeezing off these "restaurants". Eating healthy is a choice, it's a lifestyle, it's an investment in your future self. Eating is also a matter of culture. In some countries, you just eat your lunch to survive/fill your stomach. In others it's a privileged experience with family/friends...

In California, had to stop completely except taco cart guys. $20 hour minimum wage

I visited the US this last month. 8/10 restaurants were fast food junk. 8/10 people were fat. Many grossly overweight. What a sad country.

I totally agree. I rarely go out to eat anymore because it seems like most restaurants are nasty Too salty, too greasy, too sweet for no reason. I just cook at home.

Don't you think that's fair? Or at least better. Do we want it to be lower? So they can struggle

I eat out once or twice per week. Yes, the cost keeps going up! I usually eat at cheaper places (Chipotle, local restaurants if a special day, etc). Chipotle has gone up 30% over past year! Used to be $9 ish and now it’s $12! Grabbed four slices of pizza before a movie and was surprised that with tax and tip it was $30! Those were thin slices and ordered at a counter. I can get an extra large pizza at Costco for $10!!! I cook most days, and yes, it’s much tastier and HEALTHIER! Eating out is not what it used to be.
