I lived through the late '90s in Tech Stocks. Back then, it was mostly hype.

However, I believe AI is genuine and this time is different. Therefore, I'm not too worried about technology stocks approaching the bubble point of the dot-com boom in 1999.

“This time is different” is the sentence mostly used during a buildup of a bubble. History rhymes. Prices will eventually regress to the mean and the bubble will pop. It might continue for a while, but I’d be careful.

I was to young and financially unable to get on board the tech bubble. Nice to have a 2nd chance with IA intelligence!

So folks.. if you had a website and added “online” or “i” to your business name you went public and got massive funding in the 90s tech bubble. This time it IS different, because we already have real-world use cases for AI. My 2 sats.

I think the point here is that you didn’t want to live through that, almost everyone got wrecked badly.. and it’ll probably happen again with AI, as this time there is plenty of froth and malinvestment too that will need to be cleared out eventually

Whiteness

Agreed. This time is different only in that it’s even more manic and there is even more froth and malinvestment this time due to money printing. The AI bubble will crash eventually.

Not so sure things are that different. Back then it was “there’s a website for that”, and now it’s, “there’s a chatbot for that”. Who knows how AI will end up being adopted by the masses. Apple has already disrupted NVIDIA by building their own models and running these models on their own silicon both on device and in the cloud. No NVIDIA chips required

I remember it so well, I was living on the "Digital Coast" at the time, in LA and remember a round table event with the likes of Sky Dayton, who founded Earthlink (ISP) and I ended the time in CA in the Bay area, played poker one night at a "Sandhill Road" event and think I came 2nd or 3rd as I saw through all the BS!! Then worked for a start-up which ran out of funding and was easy to find great talent as well, the bubble burst! I even had the team at Linkedin call me for feedback on their new app...I knew I did not want to miss this time around.....I was so young!! Yes, this time is different.....older and wiser and hindsight....

Arn’t apple partnering with chatgpt because they haven’t cracked AI?

Well said. That is the difference. Back then, a .com was very similar to a meme coin now. In fact. .coms might have been the first meme coin phenomenon, because few investors bothered to even look into those .com companies' financials, they just knew everyone else was buying it and it was going to the moon. It was a true mania.

Tech companies trading at 180 p/e back then… we’re at 32-50. This is the first half of the game.

The Internet as a platform had low barriers to entry, enabling numerous companies to launch websites and online businesses with minimal initial investment. This led to a proliferation of startups, many of which lacked sustainable business models. Developing AI technologies requires significant investment in research, data acquisition, and specialized hardware. This creates higher barriers to entry compared to the dot-com era, so we can not compare it. It is not the same :)
