In 2023, 17.8% of Americans reported currently having depression or being treated for depression.

Depression is often linked to disruptions in several closely related neural and cognitive processes, such as dopamine transmission, fronto-striatal brain activity and connectivity, reward processing, and motivation. Inflammation is known to reduce dopamine transmission, which plays a crucial role in effort-based decision-making for rewards. However, aerobic exercise has been shown to decrease this systemic inflammation.

Dr. Nicholas Fabiano explains that by reducing inflammation and boosting dopamine transmission, exercise can significantly improve symptoms of depression. These symptoms include anhedonia (loss of interest or pleasure), fatigue, and subjective cognitive impairment. The increased dopamine transmission from exercise enhances the brain's propensity to exert effort, thereby alleviating these symptoms.

Additionally, cognitive impairment in depression can be understood through an effort-based decision-making framework. This perspective helps explain the positive impact of exercise on cognitive function in individuals with depression. By incorporating regular aerobic exercise, individuals can reduce inflammation, boost dopamine transmission, and ultimately improve their overall mental health and cognitive function.

Never posted on this topic but... I have had a deep self loathing for many, many years and I want to say that although exercise does go a long way to feeling better, there is often an underlying cause which it alone would not address. I've never got help and it burns a hole in me until now, don't let that be you and seek guidance even if you exercise 💪

Love this James! I'm a psychiatry provider and I'm always working on increasing exercise with my patients! I share research that exercise has been shown to improve mood almost as much as the medicine, so I help them see it's even more powerful to combine treatments. Vitamin levels are also important (e.g., folic acid deficiency or difficulties converting it to active form can affect mood too).

Been following James for the last 3 years and he often speaks of getting in somewhere in the neighborhood of 10,000 steps a day. So since March this year my gf and I get up at 4:30 every morning and go to the local park and power walk for 3.5-4.0 miles Monday-Saturday and take Sundays to rest. We’re retired and in our early 60’s so it also gets our butts up and outta bed with a purpose now. Cutting out most processed foods has helped and intermittent fasting everyday is golden. Feeling much better. Thank you James for lighting the fire within 👍

Dear all. As a man that is in process of overcoming depression after four years of misery, let me shortly share my way to heal in hope that I can help even a single human being. 1. SHARE AND TELL to someone you trust what is going on. 2. DIET. Absolutely no sugar. Intermittent fasting. Testosteron / estrogen supporting complements (m/f). Do research e. g. on Youtube, there are many great experts sharing how tos. 3. DAILY ROUTINE. Get up. Get sunlight. Stand on the earth/sand. Get busy. Do anything you love EVERY day. Listen to music. Dance. Call your family and friends. Go to bed in time. No blue light! Read a book outloud. 4. PURPOSE. Be usefull. Smile on kids. Help a stranger. Learn one thing every day. 5. THERAPY - I use Wim Hoff's breathwork, cold baths, Holotropic breathing and Dunkeltherapy. Changed my life and worldview 20 yrs ago. I wish you the best. I love you all.

The most cases of depression are a disfunction of the mitochondria in the neurons. They produce much less energy ATP. Its a poison mostly from fructose (suggar is made from fructose and glucose).

Yessir - Damn right! Get those endogenous psychoactives blastin’! Get outdoors, among the dirt and trees, and get some! Indoor exercise is cool too. Anytime, anywhere. Good post, great reminder.

Support networks are powerful. We can be the node that adds value to someone’s life. To anyone battling mental health challenges, talk to someone. Loneliness and rumination perpetuate these states, it’s been shown. You’re not alone, friends.
