Warning: Sophisticated Social Engineering Scam Targeting BTC Meetup Individuals
Community members, please be aware of a recent social engineering scam that targeted one of our members. This incident highlights the importance of vigilance and verification, even when dealing with seemingly familiar contacts. Here's how the scam unfolded - I will try break it down from the info I got from our member.
First, the scammer first met or was aware that the member met someone at the Bitcoin Conference. They could figure out who they met. DANGER DO NOT PUT PICS UP ON SOCIAL MEDIA. IF U HAVE TO HIDE YOUR FACE!
Second there was Infiltration of private group: The scammer gained access to a private Telegram group associated with a local cryptocurrency meetup.
Third gathering inside information: The attacker collected specific details about recent events, including: eg the recent group trip to Nashville for BTC Conf.
Fourth they could piece together key info eg the name of the distillery where meetings are held and even had the identity of the group organizer.
Impersonation: The scammer posed as the group organizer who works for a large Bitcoin Company....
Initial contact: The impersonator reached out to the group member through Telegram - there is a reason I don't use or ever have used TELEGRAM!
Phone call deception: A phone call was made, during which the scammer's voice sounded remarkably similar to the Meet Up Organizer. This may have involved the use of AI voice cloning technology. We are not sure on this one.
Creating urgency: The impersonator claimed to need assistance opening a Lightning Network channel before an upcoming event where they were supposedly presenting. They needed BITCOIN to do this.
Financial bait: The scammer offered a return deal on S21 mining equipment, claiming it was from a friend exiting the mining business.
Exploiting trust: The victim found the request plausible due to Organizers real-life association with the Bitcoin Company and after having met face to face many times incl BTC Conf, Meetups etc
Key Takeaways:
DO NOT GIVE ANYTHING TO ANYONE EVER
If you have to, always verify requests for money or sensitive information, even if they appear to come from trusted sources. DO NOT HAND OVER ANYTHING UNTIL YOU GOT THE GOOD IN RETURN eg Title, etc
Be wary of urgent requests or too-good-to-be-true deals.
Double-check through official channels before taking any action.
Always do FACETIME TO MAKE SURE PERSON IS REAL. SCAMMERS WILL ALWAYS DENY THIS>
Remember that voice technology can be used to mimic known individuals.
Stay safe and always maintain a healthy level of skepticism, especially in the cryptocurrency space where scams are prevalent.
Avoid Telegram, Social etc. I don't read emails, I don't answer phones, I don't do DM,s etc
