Why I never invested in TON Coin (Patreon)

Several months ago, I got a Sunday Patreon Q&A question on "why I chose not to invest in Telegram's TON Coin, The Open Network".

My decision was straightforward. Although I understood the potential network effects of Telegram, I opted not to purchase the coin for several reasons:

TON Coin Summary

  • It received a very low score on the crypto compendium.

  • I was not impressed with the app's security and privacy features.

  • Telegram is a hub for hackers, scammers, and terrorists.

  • Activist Journalists also use it.

  • Pavel Durov, based in Dubai, has a questionable history, and I always research leadership teams. Notably, he was recently arrested.

  • There was talk within the U.S. government about categorizing it similarly to TikTok, raising the possibility of a ban.

I still haven't seen any detailed reports on what the actual charges are. I don't know anything about the guy. I do know that in this environment of suspicion and paranoia, bad and good actors are often treated the same. I wouldn't condemn or support him simply because he has been detained. Don't assume he was detained falsely just because he is on the crypto "team". By now, I would have thought that many of you would recognize that dirty rats in crypto are common. SBF, anyone?

There are a lot of people in this space who conflate free speech with freedom from consequences of speech, even if just to disagree. There are few places other than the USA where you can say whatever you want. Own your words, don't hide it, here. Nobody is arresting Elon around here. It seems to me that there is more of a lack of courage and accountability than anything else. Why hide on telegram? Just say it and own it.

Watch his interview with Tucker. He's a very impressive person. Runs a very small focused team, owns it all. Escaped Russia. Worth watching before believing all the negatives.

Durov's ex-press secretary Lobushkin: the arrest of the Telegram founder is connected with the USA. The former press secretary of the Russian entrepreneur and programmer Pavel Durov named the country responsible for his arrest. According to Georgy Lobushkin, the detention of the Telegram founder is connected with the USA, not France. He told RT about this. Lobushkin emphasized that the messenger complied with the laws of all the countries in which it was present. He is sure that there is no point in discussing the intentions of the French authorities who arrested Durov, since they "do not play any role here at all."

Absolutely, it’s completely understandable to not invest your own hard earned cash because you think it’s too risky. There’s a lot of people/sheep on here (and everywhere) that can’t think for themselves or understand different perspectives. These people are dangerous.

Not sure why more people are not talking about SOLCHAT. James made a video last year with it being one of his SOLCHAT ALTS top 10. He used profits from a SOL PERP trade to buy it. On chain showed it was about $8.5k at the time, which was bigger than some of his other SOL ALT purchases. From memory I think he had a S/L at about $2-3, but it recently fell to $0.47 so unless he bought more down there and didn’t tell us, he might not have any in his current bag. Why am I telling you this in reference to TON? CHAT is 100% private, it has better security and future roadmap than TON. It will be the primary chat for the new SOLANA phone 2 in 2025. There is a good reason why it just did a 5X+ in a week. Forget about TON and just use SOLCHAT, and own it. Much better risk reward IMO!

It is known that he would NOT have been arrested if he would have provided a 'back door' to FBI, CIA, NSA to Telegram so they could spy on us whilst protecting country. He decided not to do it for 'privacy' and 'freedom of speech reasons. Subsequently I believe he was framed by the FBI or other agency. Well known tactics btw. These usually include, very commonly, anything sexual, could be rape or child related (not rapidly checked and easy to manipulate) plus financial and crime/terrorism related stuff. This is precisely, once again, the tactics used by France, ie, a puppet of USA, the puppet master. In any case, he might as well be guilt, BUT everyone should be presumed innocent until proven otherwise (beyond reasonable doubt). My view is in line with today's Ivan On Tech, ie, he's as guilty for terrorism as the inventor of BIC pens is, just because many evil plans were written with his pens and didn't do anything to prevent it. Anyhoo, let's wait and see. As for TON, still has the fastest TPS recorded, world record, and lots of good stuff, but.... sucks in a lot of parameters... Once again, let's wait and see...

His arrest seems to be more about a global crackdown on free speech. We're very fortunate Elon bought Twitter.
