A recent study published in JAMA Network Open has found a significant association between the daily consumption of olive oil and a reduced risk of dementia-related death. The study, conducted by researchers from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, analyzed data from over 92,000 participants over a 28-year period. This research was part of the Nurses' Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study.

Key Findings

  • Olive Oil Consumption: Participants who consumed more than 7 grams of olive oil per day had a 28% lower risk of dying from dementia-related causes compared to those who rarely or never consumed olive oil.

  • Diet Quality and Genetic Factors: The association remained significant even after adjusting for overall diet quality and genetic factors, such as the presence of the apolipoprotein ε4 (APOE ε4) allele, which is a known risk factor for Alzheimer's disease.

  • Substitution Effects: The study also found that replacing 5 grams per day of margarine or mayonnaise with olive oil was associated with an 8% to 14% lower risk of dementia-related mortality.

Big olive oil bull here. I take one tablespoon first thing AM. Look for a high Polyphenol & oleic acid, extra virgin olive oil. Like previously stated in the thread, check label, obviously you do not want it cut with any seed oils. Additionally, it is a red flag if you see that it is "made in" or sourced from multiple countries.

I buy the one from Bryan Johnson (Blueprint) and love it. It's expensive (about $31 per bottle) but an investment to my health.

Appreciate you could share what brand you buy and the website where to buy. Thanks .

It’s probably the fact that people usually replace seed oils with olive oil and because they stop taking seed oil they benefit regardless. Just a thought

Ofc "replacing 5 grams per day of margarine or mayonnaise with olive oil was associated with an 8% to 14% lower risk of dementia-related mortality." You are replacing an animal product with a plant product. I have olive oil everyday. But remember, eating the whole food is better than a processed food. All oil is processed. Not watching any news will also reduce the chance of dementia

People still eating margarine? Jeez!

I do not share often but for what its worth, this something I use often for the last few years and feel it has a real benefit. It is basically olive oil on steroids. Do your own research. https://c360health.com/our-story/

I use butter. Or Avacado oil. Never ever any seed oils or vegetable oils

Zoe Harcombe wrote an excellent article on why Olive Oil is "Not all that" as she puts it. To give you the TLDR: It's got no minerals. It's got two vitamins, and then other foods are much better sources. Olive oil is simply not best for any micronutrients. On antioxidants, consuming brewed coffee supplies about 10 times as many per weight based on the NIH ORAC (if that's important to you, plus with a black coffee it doesn't come with a whole lot of energy too). She also cites a Twitter account who makes the claim that there aren't enough olive trees in the world to produce everything sold as "Olive Oil". Certainly, many such products are diluted with something else. On this kind of study in general, this is "Nutritional Epidemiology", based on weak observational data, and really can't be trusted. I think it's particularly poor for them to claim it shows a change in "risk" of anything. Risk implies cause and effect, and it's not credible to claim that based on observational research. It's the old "Risk of drownings are associated with ice cream sales" problem of associations; one isn't necessarily the cause of the other just because they're associated. So, have your olive oil if you like, especially if it's from a reputable source and good quality, but it's unlikely to be a magical elixir of health :)

Good call James. Polyunsaturated fats specifically of the omega 6 variety are destroying us. Mono and saturated are far better and more heat stable
