I own Alibaba (BABA) - entered around 8 months ago. At the time, I faced a lot of skepticism. People questioned why I'd buy a Chinese stock. My rationale was simple: I saw potential in their artificial intelligence and alpha-generating capabilities. Looking at where we are now, that decision paid off. We also have a long way to go as BABA is very far off its all time high. This should be trading at $100 IMHO.

Anyhow, Alibaba just unveiled Qwen2-VL, a new vision-language AI model that outperforms GPT-4o in several benchmarks — particularly excelling in document comprehension and multilingual text-image understanding.

The details:

Qwen2-VL can understand images of various resolutions and ratios, as well as videos over 20 minutes long.

The model excels particularly at complex tasks such as college-level problem-solving, mathematical reasoning, and document analysis.

It also supports multilingual text understanding in images, including most European languages, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, and Vietnamese.

You can try Qwen2-VL on Hugging Face, with more information on the official announcement blog.

Why it matters: There’s yet another new contender in the state-of-the-art AI model arena, and it comes from China’s Alibaba. Qwen2-VL’s understanding of diverse visual inputs and multilingual requests could lead to more sophisticated, globally accessible AI applications.

Nice one. Was considering it but did not get

I’d still like to hear your rationale on the risks of Chinese stocks. My hesitance on them is not because I don’t see gains on their charts, but have heard of and don’t fully understand the potential risks are high - that the whole market is a sham and unreliable - a potential sort of rug pull at any moment. Does one truly own anything, when it’s run by the CCP?

I’ve lost so much money on this stock. I bought it several years back and it went up nicely leading up to the Ant finance spin off. At that point it was selected for destruction by the PRC gov. I no longer invest there as any company can fall afoul of the government at any time and their growth hampered.

Hi Team, not sure how many of us are music fans, but if you ever have cold feet about BTC, listen to the song “Taxman” by the Beatles. Thanks George.

I got burned so many times with Chinese stocks/leaderships in the past: Tencent, China Mobile, TAL Edu Grp, PDD and recently SMCI, where in 2020 SEC charged the CEO Charles Liang of manipulating accounting/books, he was accused of doing it again last week by Hindenburg Research. NO MORE.

I bought the Russian Gazprom (from a pick list by Doug Casey) the year before the Ukraine crisis. When the Ukraine war started the US based stock price dropped 60%. Then Russian assets were frozen and trading was halted. Now 2 years later no brokerage wants to hold the stock on their books, so I will lose the remaining 40%!
