Rule Du Jour: Rule #12: Don’t Lose Money

I think Warren Buffett's famous quote, "Rule No. 1: Never lose money. Rule No. 2: Never forget rule No. 1," emphasizes the critical importance of capital preservation in investing. Protecting your capital at all costs and avoiding unnecessary risks is key to building long-term wealth.

Every day and ass it will bounce and pop. Every day something will do well. Every day I get called a loser for not being in an asset that went up six or 10% in a day. The key is consistency and the key is not to chase rabbits. This is a very important thing to do. Yes, every dog has its day but often times, it will not do well over the long term. That's why I always focus on investing in pristine assets.

Here are three key reasons why this approach is crucial for amassing wealth over time:

  • Power of compounding: By avoiding significant losses, you allow your capital to compound uninterrupted over long periods. Even small losses can have a big impact on long-term returns due to the effect of compounding. Preserving your capital ensures you have more money working for you to generate returns year after year.

  • Avoiding permanent loss: This ties into my allocations rule, diversify enough and market fluctuations are normal, permanent loss of capital severely impairs your ability to recover and grow wealth. Eg I can take a hit on TSLA and I took a hit on SOL when it fell to $8 - but I know they will rise again.

  • Emotional stability: Avoiding big losses helps maintain emotional stability and prevents panic selling during market downturns. This allows you to stick to your long-term investment bags eg BTC and TSLA without making rash decisions based on greed or fear. I am fine with solid returns, I don't need the 100xs a lot of 10xs already gets me far beyond my wildest dreams eg GOOG NVDA TSLA SOL CLSK BTC etc

The "never lose money" principle doesn't mean taking no risks at all. Rather, it emphasizes thorough research, understanding your investments, and carefully balancing risk and potential return. By preserving capital and avoiding unnecessary risks, investors can harness the power of compounding to build substantial wealth over the long run.

Yep, chasing rabbits is definitely something to avoid. On that note, I'll take a 2x from CLSK and be happy if it happens. It's more like the tortoise right now

One of the most important rules in Investing. Thank you

Wrama

This one is so important. Disregarding it turns an investment portfolio into a house of cards. Thanks for the insights, James.

BluegrassStoic

Seems like a goal, one that all other rules help ensure. Thank you so much for sharing your wisdom with us.

Love this statement "Every day and ass it will bounce and pop" Love you James, but sometimes the AI doesn't understand what you're dictating to it, or it believes you're into something else... Still it's humorous...thanks for all you do!

Thank you! Fairly new here and learning everyday. I’ll be better equipped in 2025. It helps having a safety fund in case of correction fyi.
