This topic is just too important and I want to stress a couple of things and just to remind people of want to be aware of

1. *Self-Custody Risks*: Many today highlighted the dangers of self-custody, especially for those who are not highly tech-savvy. Even small mistakes, like entering a seed phrase on a fake site or being misled by a convincing scam, can result in devastating losses. Cold wallets like Trezor or Ledger do not offer third-party help if compromised, and the sole responsibility lies with the user.

2. *Sophistication of Scams*: Scammers are becoming more sophisticated, utilizing phishing links, voice recognition, and even fake police or support calls to gain access to users' funds. The growing complexity makes it harder to distinguish legitimate communication from scams. Remember the police will never call you Coinbase will never call you. Trezor will never call you. You're on your own. If somebody calls you, it's a scam..

3. *Seed Phrase Security*: Several people emphasized the importance of never sharing or inputting seed phrases at the request of a third party. Any interaction involving seed phrases should only be initiated by the user. Mismanaging seed phrases is one of the most common ways people lose their funds. This is so critical never give anybody anything ever.

4. *The Paradox of Self-Custody*: The phrase "your keys, your coins" holds true, but it also brings immense responsibility. Many users find the risks of managing cold storage outweigh the benefits. A few suggested that unless one is extremely tech-savvy, cold storage may not be worth the anxiety and potential risk of loss.

5. *ETFs and Proxies as Safer Options*: For users who fear the complexities of self-custody, Bitcoin ETFs or proxies like MicroStrategy (which holds Bitcoin) were recommended. These options allow people to invest in Bitcoin indirectly, offering a layer of protection and professional management without having to worry about seed phrases or scams. it's funny. This is one of the main reasons in 2022 and early 2023. I decided to only invest in microstrategy because I didn't want the responsibility of cold storage.. Others were I could get infinitely more leverage with options and also manage risk with options. Harder to do with Bitcoin.

6. *Growing Popularity of ETFs*: As ETFs simplify the process of investing in Bitcoin, they might attract more investors who are cautious about self-custody. These products could become the preferred choice for those seeking exposure to Bitcoin without the inherent risks of managing private keys. as I witnessed as well in early 2024 a lot of old wallets moved to the ETF for this security reason.

7. *Scam Prevention*: Many users shared precautionary measures like not answering unknown calls, avoiding unsolicited links, and staying vigilant for social engineering tactics. Awareness and skepticism are critical in the current landscape.

With Gov'ts getting more authoritarian there's still plenty of reason to hold pure BTC, though I totally see the risks outlines here.

James, you mentioned your method. Can you elaborate on it once more.

BoneDoc

James, thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Way safer and easier to own proxys like MSTR. Plus you can hold them in tax free accounts which give you 85k govt backed guarantee for each account you hold in uk. No t sure about US or other countries. Whatever crypto I hold are on cold storage wallets and my key phrases are cut in half and buried in separate time capsules. Plus whatever emails or calls you get from ledger, trezor etc you ignore. Just never give out your seed phrase. Only time you do that is if you lose your cold storage wallet.

Diversification of my BTC...some self-custody, some ETFs, some on exchanges, and some MSTR. 😉

I have always heard "not your keys, not your crypto". Like a religious mantra. I get it. But, this can be dangerous. Losing keys, having them stolen, brain injury, death and unable to pass them on. Forced to give them over. The list goes on. So, I keep mine split up in MSTR, GBTC before ETFs, on exchanges and cold storage. New mantra "lose your keys, not your crypto".

For those with 1 or more BTC may also wish to consider using a multisig service such as casa.io Pricing starts at $250 PA, not cheap, but will offer peace of mind. They offer products from individuals to institutions.

I get it, there are clear risks with self-custody, but assuming that you are safe when investing in an ETF also carries risks which here are not mentioned. To be more specific, ETFs go against the basic principles around the invention of Bitcoin, mainly the idea that the owner remains 100% in control of your BTC, and censorship resistance (which you obviously don't have investing in an ETF), to just mention most important ones. It would be fair and give a more balanced view of the pros and cons if these arguments would have been mentioned as well. And as a note on the side: Our society these days is all for convenience as opposed to being self-responsible. And as long as this paradigm of behavior doesn't change, little will improve in this world. Yes it's risky to self-custody, but it is also a step on the path of personal evolution and taking more responsibility for one's life.

Couldn't agree more especially with your side note. Many people are so lazy these days.

MSTR track the bitcoin price exactly tho? So if you put your bitcoin to MSTR you would get exactly the same price if bitcoin for up?
