Hey Team,

I've just executed the 7th strategic pair trade between Tesla (TSLA) and MicroStrategy (MSTR) :

Trade Details

Initial Position:

  • Entered: I swapped MSTR to TSLA at ratio 1.01-1.02 a few weeks back

  • Today's Exit: TSLA at $257.55

  • Today's Re-entry: MSTR at $233.12

  • Current Ratio: 0.90514

  • Trade Duration: Few weeks

  • Realized Gain: 12%

  • I did it on Robinhood in After Hours

Rationale

The decision to flip back from TSLA to MSTR was driven by several factors:

  • Relative Value: MSTR appeared oversold post-earnings, presenting an attractive entry point. I also feel BTC is going to go up from 72K.

  • Election Wildcard: The upcoming 2024 U.S. presidential election introduces uncertainty, potentially affecting both stocks the same way - if 1 candidate wins I believe both assets will go up - if another wins I believe 1 could fall hard (tsla).

Outlook

While I remain bullish on both Tesla and Bitcoin, this trade capitalizes on short-term market inefficiencies.

Exit Strategy

I'm prepared to reverse this trade again when the MSTR/TSLA ratio reaches 1.01, aligning with our original entry point. This pair trade exemplifies the easy way in which we can increase our bag size in a tax free account.

Hi James. For comparison Is there any chance you can give us the increased return of these trades vs just leaving them 50/50 in TSLA/MSTR? Thanks :)

N00b question: Can some 1 explain to me please how to create the MSTR/TSLA pair in the tradinview app? I managed to creat it but when I open it, it goes to MSTR itself.

Hello, James! Thanks to you my wife and me (both 53) bought Tesla, Microstrategy, Bitcoin and Solana. Our Tesla-bag makes 50 % of our portfolio and is well beyond what you calculated as the bear case for our country. We are DCAing a small amount monthly into Tesla. We would like to retire in the early 2030s. Trading is not our passion, rather small scale farming besides our regular jobs. Nevertheless, I feel under pressure not only to watch every video, follow every post but also to use your models. I subscribed to Profittaking but realized, I really don’t enjoy this type of activity. I asked myself, if I need to take profit considering our bag and plan and unsubscribed…It drives me a little nuts and is too time consuming. My question: NFA, but considering our bag and time horizon, would it be ok to just relax and look at the bag again in 2030 without daily worries about taking profit, find the next runner etc. I am aware that everything can go to zero, but if that happens we have other worries anyway. Thank you!

You're trading MSTR/TSLA chart, right? If so, you divide MSTR PRICE by TSLA Price just as the chart shows. EG. 227.09/249.35=0.91. Think about it this way, for each share of MSTR at 227,.09 you sold, you would be able to buy 0.91 shares of TSLA with that cash where TSLA costs 249.35 per share. Even though you sold TSLA for 249.35 and were able to use that cash to buy 1.09 shares of MSTR with that cash, you still need to keep using the MSTR/TSLA ratio to keep track of your trade value.

The best portfolio performance is by dead people. No joke, so there is some merit in set it and forget it IF you were investing in something like the indices SPY or QQQ. However, since you are holding individual tickers, your portfolio needs to be watched a bit more closely. Think of it like gardening. If you just throw out a bunch of wildflower seeds in spring, you're good for the year. You can pick them at the end of the season. If you're cultivating tomatoes, you need to water them daily, make sure there's no weeds, remove any blight, prune any bushes around them that might potentially block the sunlight etc. I have no idea what gardening entails, but I think the analogy works. That said, because you're a Patreon member, you're going to get every trade alert that James does. So in another sense, you CAN set it and forget it AS LONG as you follow James's trade alerts for the tickers you own. That said again, the more attention you give to your portfolio, the more you learn about the individual tickers, the more prepared you are to make your own decisions about it in the case that James ever decides to stop. No sure I can give an agricultural analogy for that. LOL

Triiim!

How are we all feeling about a swap back to TSLA?
