Hesitation can indeed be a significant obstacle in investing, often leading to missed opportunities and potential losses. This principle can be formulated into an investing rule: "Overcome analysis paralysis and act decisively on well-researched opportunities."

The Cost of Hesitation in Investing

Hesitation in investing, often stemming from analysis paralysis or fear of markets or even market volatility, can have substantial financial consequences. This is particularly evident in rapidly growing sectors or with high-performing stocks.

Bitcoin Case Study
A real-world example illustrates this point:

  • My Initial Recommendation to a good friend in 2017: Buy 2 Bitcoin one for each Kid in 2017

  • Investor's cash position: $150,000

  • Time to act: 2 years

  • Entry point: $3000 per BTC

  • He ignored me and asked me today, nearly 8 years later if it is too late to buy Bitcoin. He has none. He kids are also not wholecoiners. I hammered him on this for years to get some per kid.

Tesla Case Study
Another real-world example illustrates this point from a good friend I spoke to yesterday:

  • Initial recommendation: Buy Tesla stock at $110, $150, $180, $200.

  • Investor's cash position: $600,000 (he sold a condo and has been sitting on the cash now for nearly 5 years as he says "I am waiting for the market to reverse as it's gone up too much right now" well that never happened

  • Time to act: 2 years

  • He ended up buying some Tesla at $250 per share. The sad part is he only spent $20,000. Still sitting on $580,000 in cash.

THE LEARNING:

The investor's hesitation resulted in:

  • A higher entry point or NO entry point than potentially available earlier

  • A minimal or no position size relative to available capital

  • Missed gains from the stock's appreciation over two years or a 26x per Kid on BTC

The Psychology Behind Hesitation

Hesitation in investing often stems from:

  • Fear of loss

  • Anxiety about market volatility

  • Over-analysis leading to decision paralysis

These psychological factors can prevent investors from capitalizing on opportunities, even when they have substantial capital available.

Strategies to Overcome Hesitation

  • Set Clear Investment Goals: Define your objectives and risk tolerance to guide decision-making. Sometimes just bite the bullet. Dont squabble over $20 on a $100 stock when you know it is going to $2000. Another way I say it - Make a Plan and Stick to it eg hence my Wholecoiner Videos, my Retire on Videos etc.

  • Implement Dollar-Cost Averaging: Regularly invest fixed amounts to reduce the impact of market timing anxiety or even better use DCAS

  • Educate Yourself: Understanding market dynamics can help alleviate fears and build confidence

  • Start Small: Begin with smaller investments to build comfort with market participation.

Thank you. Fear of loss everything comes down to fear. I work every day and I’m taking a course from Mel Robbins right now to help be able to manage and remove fear thank you, James you’re amazing… I hope to be by your side learning from you and investing for a long time 😇🥰

So true well put

Thank you James!! Yes, wish I had come across you a few years earlier, but the last year has been a profitable learning experience (so far to go -- like getting to a comfort level to try options), but after a few BIG unwise decisions years ago with real estate (land) that massively hurt -- we are growing nicely again. Excited to learn more from you and the video trainings in the next 90 days.

So true James! I missed out on many opportunities to greatly increase my wealth since 2018 thanks to being in an unproductive cash-heavy position for too long, waiting on the sidelines. Thankfully, I went all-in over the last year in crypto and some stocks (esp. TSLA) and, so far, do not regret it. Better late than never. The last point - to educate yourself so you can better assess the actual risk:reward ratio and calibrate your emotions so they don't thwart you - has been key for me. I never could've taken the considered risks I've taken over the last year without it. Thanks again for helping me on this path; you are greatly appreciated.

The problem I have is now that I’m involved with investing in the last year all these great buying opportunities are now gone and everything is super pricey. What’s the next $25 TSLA or $8 MSTR??

I agree to 100% James. Months ago, i had to think how i can invest monthly money for my daughter, that she has with 18 a good bag of money to have a good start into life. I asked many friends of me and all said a savings book or gold. I couldnt agree with them, made a monthly savings plan with BTC, TSLA and a tiny tiny portion with an ETF and the gains i made in the last month, i wouldn make with an savings plan in 10 years. Second when in C... times BTC crashed to levels of 4/5k$ per piece, i told to many of my friends that they should buy. All said no and that they would buy at levels of 1k$/piece, which never happend. During bear market they lauged at me, because BTC had been falling so much, but now, they are asking why it had been since Co.. times increased more than 15x!! Third: a friend of me, who is earning more than 100.000$/year asked me, how my BTC investments are doing. I told him my honest btc journey, advised him to make a montly DCA plan (since btc had been 20k$) and until now, he is too scared to do it. Everyone gets the btc price what he deserves.

This is excellent advice. I’ve been guilty of this more times than I can count. I’ve found that even investing a small amount in a stock or crypto I’m interested in is a good way to go. That way I’m much more likely to continue adding to my position instead of waiting on the sidelines waiting for a perfect opportunity that may never come.

This is a great post. A true illustration of the cost of overthinking it all … DCA is your best friend

James this advice with specific examples is so on point. I like the even start small to gain more comfort. I had recommended that to a close friend regarding getting a small position in Telsa under $200 about a year ago, but she is still waiting to jump in.

Superdro

I've been hammering my friends about Bitcoin since 2022, they all just ignore me. I'm sure some of them are going to ask me if its too late pretty soon.
