Simple answer - investing in R&D!

Can Germany catch China or the US? Not unless they start investing hard in R&D!

"It’s often easy to overlook the size of the U.S. stock market. Apple's market capitalization is $3.5 Trillion, which is bigger than the stock markets of all but four countries in the world! Finally, no matter what our opinion of Elon is, Tesla is now worth $1.27 trillion — A 20 year old company is now worth more than all the 1,472 companies listed in Spain, a country that’s more than 500 years old! There might be a lesson in this.

Bob your uncle

Yeah I'd like to see that as a percentage of GDP. I never trust absolute numbers as normally people report absolute numbers are trying to skew the discussion. ratios matter. Absolute numbers really don't.

This can be true, but we're talking about R&D spending, so its not clear that absolute values aren't informative. The ratio of total GDP to spending is interesting, because it might indicate priorities; but, I'd argue absolute spending is better for estimating overall aggregate benefit from the R&D spending. If this were not the case and efficiency or value of R&D spending was somehow correlated to its proportion of a spender's GDP, we would expect to see scenarios where a small country would disproportionately spend on R&D and somehow get back more total value than the US, even though the US spent astronomically more in absolute terms. I think this is, clearly, wrong both intuitively and objectively.

Why do we share this practice. It’s anti work and save. Punishing those who have got ahead for those who haven’t. My take on it.
