AI: The Singularity (Patreon)
Content
The singularity refers to a theoretical moment 1) when artificial intelligence (AI) surpasses human intelligence and 2) begins to improve itself autonomously.
How Are We Here?
Musk has long warned about this trajectory. In past statements, he’s predicted AI could outsmart humans by 2025 or 2029, and his work with xAI aims to accelerate human-friendly AI development. His February 24th tweet suggests he believes this critical juncture—where AI learns for itself—has arrived or is imminent. I am not sure exactly, but when you look at the rate of change of DEV, it is frightening.
Why is the Rate of Change Critical?
Humans typically think linearly—expecting steady, predictable progress. But AI’s growth is exponential, meaning it doubles in capability over short intervals like 10 days or 2 months. Imagine if AI learns and gets twice as smart every 10 days. How smart is it after one year? This is what humans cannot wrap their heads around and I've been stressing exponentially for a long time and the math is quite crazy. - at the end of 365 days, doubling smarts every 10 days, the AI’s intelligence is approximately 97.2 billion times its starting level—it’s a complete upheaval.
Once AI self-improves, each iteration builds on the last at an accelerating pace. Imagine a human coder taking months to optimize software, versus an AI doing it in seconds, then using that improved version to make the next leap even faster. This “virtuous cycle” (or vicious, depending on perspective) means AI could go from matching human intelligence to vastly exceeding it in a matter of months. Musk’s “event horizon” metaphor implies we’re crossing into this uncontrollable acceleration now!
Musk’s Warning and People’s Readiness
AI’s ability to learn for itself is here, and society isn’t prepared for the speed of what’s coming.
Are We Ready?
No, not at all! I hope I am wrong.
In my convo w Darius Dale he expects his role to disappear in 5 to 10 years.
