First - the good news! If you are in Hungary and have 2 babies, mothers are exempt from income tax for life. Mom should go work and Dad should stay at home :D

Now Some alarming Stats

March 29, 2024, that Italy recorded just 379,000 births in 2023, marking the lowest annual birth total since the nation’s unification in 1861.

Japan 1.2, Spain 1.1, Greece 1.3 Poland 1.1 and Taiwan 1.1.

In order to have a stable population the birth rate of 2.1 is required.

EXAMPLE

South Korea's fertility rate hitting a record low of 0.68 children per woman, with an even lower rate of 0.55 in Seoul. Only 230,000 babies were born in 2023, population is 53 Million People. The country faces a dire future, with preschools already closing due to the declining birth rate.

This is impact on population over 4 generations

Basically 96% will disappear over the next 3 generations.

Like all things in life, this will be cyclical. It will reverse when things improve in a generation. It will have economic repercussions, but fewer people will equal less pollution (hopefully). NOT a tree-hugger, just reasonable deductions from what is right in front of our eyes. Real fear is that only the impoverished will have them, and that means lower education overall. Not a dig on the impoverished. Actually the opposite.

If economic concerns (costs of living) are a factor behind S Korea’s tiny families, hopefully the combined deflationary effect of population decline and AI/automation reverse the trend in coming years.
