REM THIS ALSO APPLIES TO ALL WESTERN NATIONS

Lowering your burn rate is key. Living outside major metro areas can drastically cut costs—without sacrificing quality of life. Example: You need ~$36K to be middle class in Mississippi vs. $67K in Massachusetts. Location matters.

Is Middle Class Shrinking

People talk about the middle class being ravaged in this new world. I dug into the data. It is true. But there is a bright spot. Upper bound middle class has shrunk from 61% to 51% but the lower bound has grown from 14% to 19%.

Why the Variations

The states with the highest middle-class income ranges, like Massachusetts ($67K–$200K), New Jersey ($67K–$200K), and Maryland ($66K–$197K), are often located in the Northeast or on the coasts, where the cost of living is generally higher. These areas tend to have more expensive housing markets, higher taxes, and greater overall expenses, which push the income needed to be "middle class" upward.

States like Hawaii ($64K–$191K) and Alaska ($58K–$173K) have high ranges partly due to their unique economic conditions—Hawaii’s high cost of living due to its isolation and tourism-driven economy, and Alaska’s higher wages tied to industries like oil and fishing, plus its remoteness.

Mr. .00000001

Living in rural , central/central pa - 2 people earning 50k year can live very well if they manage their debt. Pittsburgh 2 hrs to the west or Philly 4 hrs to the east and you barely rent an apartment. For 20 plus years I earned 90k plus but health concerns took me out of IT and the realization of "Time" being the most valuable asset I could ever hold I stayed part time for last ten years. By his grace I can ride my motorcycle 7 days week(spring, summer, bit of fall) fish, volunteer, help family etc. with this available time I have noticed I made much better decisions, developed better relationships, etc. living here we give up access to the amenities offered by bigger cities such as premium shopping, restaurants, major sports, etc. if someone told me they would pay me 100k plus year to come back to full time work 40 plus hrs....I would absolutely say no....my blood disorder has given me the privilege of Wealth through time a very hard asset in these days and times. With a 401 k of 20 plus years the last few years the best I could do is " growth" which yielded 16 and 19% last 2 years. my spare change has gone to TSLA(Roth) , BTC(mostly mstr) and Sol ... missed many of the big ones but sitting nice enough for now.....Make time not money is one I heard a long time ago
