Yes, these are undeniably challenging times — and I say that with the benefit of long-term perspective. I’ve lived through several major market downturns and global events: Black Monday in 1987, the uncertainties of the Cold War, Desert Shield/Storm in the early 1990s, the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis, the Dot-Com bust from 2000 to 2002, the 2008–2009 Global Financial Crisis, the 2010 Flash Crash, and the COVID-19 market shock in March 2020 — which, like now, caught many by surprise.
Historically, each of these periods occurred for clear reasons — but this current environment feels different. There’s a sense of disconnect between market sentiment and underlying fundamentals. That said, here are two important reminders I’ve held onto:
1) Historically, sharp downturns often lead to strong recoveries. While near-term GDP growth may still be uneven, broader macro indicators are starting to look more constructive. We’re seeing signs of stealth liquidity returning, and interest rate cuts — potentially up to five this year — could act as a significant tailwind.
2) Over the past 35 years, my most successful investments, stocks, crypto, real estate etc were all made during turbulent times just like these. My approach may be straightforward, but it’s built on conviction and long-term belief.
I just did a little DCA into SOL at $102.01 reflects my view that there is a 90 chance the crypto bull market is not over. SOL has returned to levels seen around Christmas 2023 — back then, Bitcoin was at $42K; today, BTC is $77.5K. If SOL were to return to its all-time high, that would represent a 3x move — a compelling opportunity in my view.
I also plan to re-enter equity markets tomorrow with a far more sizable allocation. I am nibbling on Crypto but munching on AI. I’ve currently deployed about 22% of my available cash and will continue to build positions at this time. The harder we fall the harder I go. Rem my biggest buy since 2020 was TSLA at $220 nearly 2 weeks ago... well TSLA is at 216 as we speak so I jumped the gun by $4 so far... but given it is going to $2K in 5 years at least... per many experts I am fine with that.
Buckle in for a bumpy nite.
Stay well everyone... this too shall pass as they say.
PS in crazy news I did not see this coming - I am hoping there is a better way forward for all countries and all citizens of the world....
