TLDR

Hinton’s view doesn’t downgrade human intelligence; it redefines it as analogy-driven rather than logic-driven. ASI (artificial super intelligence) will indeed "smoke" humans in computational and analytical tasks. Humans have a wild card; there is a chance that human intelligence’s unique blend of intuition and creativity may have a chance to remain superior to ASI. As I have said for years, focus on Educational Programs for your kids that stress CREATIVITY!

THE STORY

Geoffrey Hinton, a pioneer in artificial intelligence, argues that human thinking is less about logical reasoning and more about making analogies, based on how both AI and the brain function.

  • Human Thinking vs. Logic: Hinton suggests that the traditional view of humans as rational, logic-driven beings is flawed. As we learn more about how AI (especially neural networks) and the brain process information, it becomes clear that human brain doesn't rely on step-by-step deductive reasoning.

  • Analogy Machines: Instead, Hinton proposes that humans are "analogy machines." We think by recognizing patterns and drawing comparisons to past experiences. Hence Biases block us from the best opptys. For example, when solving a problem, we often rely on what feels familiar or resonates with something we’ve encountered before, rather than strictly following logical rules.

  • Thinking by Resonance: The term "resonance" refers to how the brain and AI systems like neural networks process information through interconnected patterns. In neural networks, inputs activate layers of nodes that "resonate" with learned patterns to produce outputs. Similarly, human thinking involves intuitive leaps, where ideas or memories resonate with the current context, guiding decisions.

  • Less Rational Than We Thought: Hinton emphasizes that this analogy-driven, intuitive process makes humans less rational than we thought. Our decisions are driven by emotions, biases, and subconscious pattern-matching rather than logic, challenging the idea that we’re primarily reasoning machines.

My eyes were really opened to humans and all their craziness on display on social media even in the early days. Emotion usually always trumps rationality in humans, and when it doesn’t, it’s rare. You can see it in the markets. Even the stand out people that are exceptionally gifted in one area are absolutely clueless and irrational in others, but tend to give advice on everything. It’s okay as we all have weaknesses and strengths, but you have to be aware in terms of whose advice to follow and on what topic of advice you may be seeking from your “idols”.

I just try to follow the "smart money" because I'm not so much those things when it comes to investing. James has taught me to be patient and its really helped my bags. Less emotion more patience!

Nothing new there. We're animals, so from an evolutionary perspective we're wired for two things: gene propagation and survival. Nothing rational about it. It's "do or die"... and yes, that still plays out in almost all of our decisions.
