For a while now I said the only tiny edge SUI has over Solana was Latency. Sui was slightly faster in this regard.

Well that all changes w Alpenglow vs. Sui

Why Alpenglow Excels

  • Ultra-Fast Finality: Alpenglow achieves ~150ms median finality (vs. SUI ~500ms), offering near-instant transaction confirmations, rivaling Web2 speeds.

  • Simpler Consensus: Alpenglow’s Votor (voting) and Rotor (data propagation) design streamlines Solana’s consensus, replacing complex Tower BFT and Proof-of-History, unlike Sui's intricate DAG-based approach.

  • Superior Fault Tolerance: Alpenglow tolerates up to 20% malicious and 20% unresponsive validators (40% total), ensuring liveness, while SUI requires >67% honest validators.

  • Scalable Network Efficiency: Rotor’s erasure-coded, flattened broadcast optimizes bandwidth for Solana’s ~2,000 validators

Alpenglow’s edge lies in its unparalleled latency, robust fault tolerance, and scalability for large validator sets, making it ideal for high-performance, global blockchain applications.

Even Toly is excited about it. Between this and Firedancer Solana is now untouchable (meaning latency was the only nag I had).

Well I remember back in the day reading all the articles about proof of work and proof of stake, proof of delegated stake, but I never tried to understand proof of history. Now I'm wondering how they can seamingly easy change the consensus while flying the chain which was/is such a crazy afford in ETH world. Ok as a normie I may never understand but is just seems strange to me.
