The $2,800 Bag Rule: Price ≠ Value (Patreon)
Content
If you're paying 50x production cost for a logo, ask yourself: what real wealth are you sacrificing? eg 10 TSLA shares which will be worth $20,000 one day?
Putting it another way:
Would you rather look rich today or be free tomorrow?
PERSONAL EXPERIENCE
I once interviewed a prospective tenant for a $2,000/month apartment. This was early 2000s. She pulled up in a sleek Mercedes, carried a Louis Vuitton bag, and wore what looked like $5,000 worth of designer fashion. But when I looked at her application, her annual income was just $50,000—and the car lease alone was $1,200 a month. To me, the math didn’t add up. It felt like a financially upside-down situation. She did not get the apt. It might be an unpopular opinion, but this is a textbook example of both waste and a huge opportunity cost—spending to project wealth instead of building it.
SECOND PERSONAL EXPERIENCE
I rem seeing Steve Jobs in Palo Alto on Sundays after they just opened the first Apple Store. I kinda spied on him. I knew he was worth billions, but was in awe of his worn-out NB sneakers, his mom jeans, and black turtle neck. That was the real flex.
Today I am very happy in my $20 Costco Sweatpants and TShirt.
h/t Sanjay for the Dior scam news :D
