Over the past few days, I’ve been exploring a transformative vision for boosting US GDP—not by cutting government costs, but by leveraging autonomy and robotics. This approach seems like the only viable path forward.

Then Elon Musk just claimed that Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology could have a “noticeable effect” on US GDP within 1–2 years, while humanoid robots could achieve a similar impact in 4–5 years. Intrigued, I ran some calculations to quantify what a “noticeable effect” might mean for GDP and, specifically, what it could imply for Tesla’s market cap. I assumed a noticeable GDP impact starts at 2%, grows to 3%, and eventually reaches 4%.

Using basic financial ratios, I back-calculated the potential market cap of Tesla based on its contribution to GDP. The results, shown in the table below, are staggering. I plan to run similar calculations for humanoid robots, where the GDP impact could be even greater, but here’s the breakdown for FSD.

Assumptions

US GDP: Approximately $30 trillion.

Noticeable GDP Impact: Defined as 2% ($600B), 3% ($900B), or 4% ($1.2T) of GDP, interpreted as Tesla’s Gross Value Added (GVA, e.g., profits, labor income, taxes minus subsidies).

Note the 3% of GDP impact is in line with Cathie Woods Tesla $2900 Robotaxi Target for 2029.

So, if AI and Bots will take over the jobs, leaving masses unemployed, who will pay for all these products? Where will GDP growth come from if nobody can afford to spend on stuff other than the basics?
