Australian-based Cortical Labs has launched the CL1, a code-deployable biocomputer integrating human brain cells on a chip with sub-millisecond feedback loops, designed for neuroscience and biotech research. The first 115 units will ship this summer (2025) at $35K each, or $20K in 30-unit server stacks. A cloud-based "wetware-as-a-service" option is also available for $300/week per unit.

Why IMHO it paints a Scary Picture of the Future with AI and Biocomputers?

The integration of human brain cells into computing systems raises ethical and existential concerns. Combining AI with biocomputers could lead to machines that mimic human cognition too closely, blurring the line between artificial and organic intelligence. This might result in unpredictable behaviors, potential sentience, or even exploitation of human-derived components. Additionally, the accessibility of such technology (via cloud services or purchase) could lead to misuse, widening the gap between ethical oversight and rapid technological advancement, and posing risks of creating entities that challenge our control or understanding of intelligence.
