AI Impact on Children (Patreon)
Content
The UK study from The Alan Turing Institute highlights the growing use of generative AI among children aged 8-12, with 22% already using it. However, a significant digital divide exists: private school students are three times more likely to have access than state school students (52% vs. 18%). This gap is worsened by private schools reporting more frequent AI use and greater teacher awareness.
Impact on Kids:
Positive Effects: AI is used for creativity and learning, helping children communicate better. Teachers also leverage it for lesson planning, presentations, and homework (66% usage).
Negative Effects: The access disparity could widen the educational gap, favoring more privileged students.
Mythoughts on Impact on Kids - ie not in the post above
I worry mainly about two items
1) Cognitive Development -Over-reliance on AI, stunting critical thinking and creativity
Children may become dependent on AI for homework and problem-solving, potentially hindering independent learning and creativity - especially first principles thinking and problem solving... the two most imp skills.
2) Social and Emotional Skills
Needless to say, like with social, video games etc, reduced face-to-face interaction, impacting social skills and empathy. Interacting with AI instead of humans can reduce opportunities for developing social skills and emotional intelligence, potentially leading to isolation. EQ is another top 3 critical skill.
