WAYMO: “TESLA WAS RIGHT, WE WASTED YEARS”

Waymo dropped a new research paper that basically says: if you want smarter self-driving cars, just throw more data and computing power at the problem.

That’s exactly what Tesla's been doing for years - ditching the old-school methods, building giant AI supercomputers, and using their army of cars to suck up data nonstop.

If this holds up, Tesla could be about to pull a GPT-3-level glow-up in autonomous driving - while Waymo watches from the rearview.

The title in quotation mark is not a good look James. Nowhere did they say anything like that. Here is the summary of chatGPT: Conclusion (in English): The paper clearly demonstrates that increasing compute, data, and model size—when scaled appropriately—leads to better performance in motion forecasting and planning. It validates that Transformer-based architectures scale effectively in this domain. However, it does not imply that Tesla was right or that Waymo "wasted years." The paper is a technical analysis of scaling laws, not a strategic endorsement or admission of past mistakes.

Yeah, I was wondering about that quote too. I searched for that phrase. I'm not sure if this is true, but someone on Twitter posted the quote. It seems as if that phrase, or something quite like it, was said by someone else but not by waymo. Here's what I read: "Corry Wang, who runs the compute show at Anthropic, said it best: 'Waymo was wrong. Tesla was right.'"

James has tendency to pump tesla with all due respect.

Folks like you and Cern told us this for years but few listened.

Tesla was right - but in some sense, WAYMO didn't waste years. It's easy to gloat looking at the rear view mirror. But, human history is full of "failures" which have led to greater understanding and technological breakthrough. Tesla made the right call, with Elon's (and no doubt, the TESLA teams) excellent foresite. But it's just as important to discover what also cannot be done - and personally I must respect Waymo's honourable sacrifice! I respect them so much for releasing a paper on the mistakes they made - true innovators. Elon is an innovation first guy and I have no doubt he has respect for that also.

And Elon fully appreciates the value in failures as well. Notably the multiple unplanned rapid disassemblies of SpaceX rockets... 🚀😁
