As I mentioned in a post last week, I'm very worried about the younger generations and children that still need to develop their brain capability. Well, here's proof of what I was afraid of.

TLDR of the MIT STUDY

  • Groundbreaking neuroscience reveals ChatGPT use dramatically suppresses human cognition, marking the first empirical evidence of AI-induced intellectual decline.

  • A staggering 83.3% of ChatGPT users failed to recall content they had just written—indicating severe disruption in memory encoding and self-authorship.

  • Neural connectivity collapsed from 79 active regions to just 42, signifying a sharp degradation in executive function, attention, and semantic processing.

  • Even after abandoning AI, prior users underperformed significantly—demonstrating lasting cognitive debt and a diminished ability to think independently.

How ChatGPT Undermines Brain Function: Key Findings from the MIT Study

A new MIT-led study titled “Your Brain on ChatGPT” reveals that relying on ChatGPT (GPT-4o) for essay writing weakens brain function, memory, and learning. Researchers tracked 54 students using EEG scans and linguistic analysis while writing SAT-style essays. Those who used ChatGPT showed 55% less neural connectivity in key brain regions tied to memory, reasoning, and executive function compared to those who wrote without assistance. Notably, even after switching off the AI, prior ChatGPT users remained cognitively under-engaged, producing bland essays with reduced originality and showing signs of “cognitive debt”—a lasting decline in mental effort and critical thinking.

The study also found that 83.3% of ChatGPT users couldn’t recall or accurately quote their own essays minutes after writing, in stark contrast to just 11.1% of non-AI users. Essays generated with ChatGPT were formulaic and scored lower for originality and depth, while users reported the lowest sense of ownership. Over time, ChatGPT users became passive, finishing tasks 60% faster but with a 32% drop in “germane cognitive load”—the mental effort required for meaningful learning. Human graders described their essays as “soulless,” with vocabulary and structure increasingly homogenized.

Conversely, those who used ChatGPT only after initial unaided brainstorming showed improved brain activity, suggesting AI may enhance learning if used strategically. The study warns that habitual use of LLMs, especially in education, may degrade core cognitive skills, with long-term implications for developing brains. Though limited in sample size and scope, and not yet peer-reviewed, the findings urge caution, advocating for hybrid learning models where human thought leads and AI follows.

This has been happening in one form or another once we started to externalise some of our skills. Like maths without a calculator or recall people's telephone numbers. I recall a time when I knew everyone's phone number off by heart, now I can barely remember my own!
