We have a Wallet Expert in the team and we analyzed this wallet way back when and this is the summary - ps this was triggered by my Security Post this morning.

I know I am going to call someones baby ugly ie if they have this wallet, they will be upset but we reviewed it... and here are the Top 3 Reasons I do not like the Tangem Wallet

While Tangem is popular for its easy-to-use card shape and tap-to-pay features, here are my concerns.

1. Too Much Influencer Hype

As I say if it is shilled hard it is a scam.... Tangem is often pushed by influencers using discount codes and affiliate links. These promotions can make it seem more trustworthy than it really is, especially to people who don’t know much about wallets. For example, some partnerships (like with Bad Idea AI) focus more on marketing than on giving honest reviews. This leads many to believe Tangem is more hype than substance.

2. Not Open Source

Even though the Tangem app is said to be open source the most important parts—like the firmware and chip security—are closed source and private (like Ledger wallets). This means independent experts can’t check what’s really going on inside the wallet, which is a big deal in crypto where trust usually comes from full transparency. This drives our wallet expert NUTS... ie it really freaks him out.

3. No Built-in Screen for Verifying Transactions

Most hardware wallets have a screen so you can double-check your transactions directly on the device. Tangem doesn’t. Instead, you must use your phone to confirm everything. If your phone gets hacked or has malware, you might not notice if something goes wrong, like sending crypto to the wrong address.

TLDR

You can shoose whatever wallet you like, but if shillers are pumping it that know nothing about security - that is a red flag for me. Closed source is the kiss of death.

I have two sets of Tangem wallets for a couple of years now. I appreciate your comments, James. There is no perfect wallet. I check my balances often. Maybe I'll take the Fidelity route in the future, but I'm happy with Tangem.

TrashPandasRock

It's a great hot wallet for everyday spending, super convenient in comparison to a ledger or trezor. It's no different than a wallet like phantom but it has the physical requirement if tapping the card to activate the transfer. Long term cold storage should be done elsewhere but I don't think anybody thinks of tangem for that.

TayDawg

So what wallet do you recommend? Im a bit worried by the Ledger comment, as I have a Ledger, also a Trezor

TheUsualSuspects

My understanding is that NO ONE has ever lost anything from storing on Tangem Wallet. I think that speaks volumes, but do acknowledge that some problem could happen in the future. Also: not okay to criticize without providing a better alternative

Tim Findlay

I have jt prefer it to ledger to be honest

Gonzalo Vega

I got Tangem and had previously tazor and ledger. I like Tangem better, I am surprised James is telling us Tangem is not safe.

Dogbones

If not Tangem or Ledger what do you use James?

Reebs1st

what do you think a better alternative with a similar ease of use ?

As much as I love James and all he does for the community, I have to disagree on his negative view on Tangem Yes Tangem is being shilled by influencers. But how can you interpret that as an indication of a poor product? This is crazy in opinion. All crypto communities are located on social networks. So why would it not be a natural marketing strategy to use the same channels Besides shilling a product and shilling a crypto is not the same. Yes influencers gets rewarded and so what. Tangem is only partly open source. This doesn’t have to be bad per definition. Perhaps there’s a reason for not sharing key information. But to my understanding the main part of the code is open Tangem solves the problem of storing and handling seed phrases in a nice way. Don’t forget many users have lost their coins either by loosing their keys or by not maintaining a secure process around their seeds

Jason

I think those are valid criticisms and not necessarily ones that should deter anyone from a Tangem (unless those are glaring concerns for you). But the ease of use, the fact no wallets been hacked and the seed is generating upon activation through the card are some benefits of Tangem. I love my Tangem wallet and the interface using the app is great. Plus you can sway almost anything inside the wallet. But I do want to spread some of my funds to another different type of wallet in the future…just to diversify

As a Canadian I would love to be able to swap my cold storage to Fidelity tax-free. I am hoping that one day this will be an option.
