Elon just hinted Tesla may never build the Model Y L variant in the US — because the focus is shifting to FSD and Robotaxis. That’s insanely bullish, since robotaxis could generate multiples more profit per vehicle than selling cars ever could.

Instead of being limited by car sales margins, Tesla is pivoting toward recurring, high-margin revenue from robotaxi services. That’s a fundamental business model upgrade.

Selling a car yields a one-time profit of perhaps $10k–$15k per unit. A robotaxi, however, can generate hundreds of thousands of dollars in lifetime service revenue by continuously working, similar to Uber but without labor costs.

Robotaxis don’t just replace car ownership; they tap into the entire transportation-as-a-service market, which is vastly larger than the auto sales market. Think trillions, not billions.

"We should all share cars."

Saw on X today that Elon is moving away from starting the “American Party” to focus on his companies as well. He instead wants to endorse JD Vance for the 2028 election. Nice to see him getting away from politics mostly and focusing on what he does best.

It may be bullish for the stock when we have widespread Robotaxis, but you will never convince families to load a bunch of car seats and strollers into a taxi of any kind, then unload them at each stop they make on a long shopping day, and carry around car seats with them while being restricted to only one stroller choice per kid (sometimes parents bring multiple strollers and pick and choose among them based on the length of the stop). It can already take awhile to load kids in a car; adding the time to set up car seats at each stop is a massive dealbreaker. Parents with young kids will choose an unsafe ICE car over a Tesla Robotaxi nearly every time.

Can anybody help with the information in this video? I love your videos James! I have some Tesla, but I feel like what’s said in your videos and this video I’m sharing don’t overlap. Don’t know what to think 🙈 “Sales down, Pay up: Inside Tesla’s strange new reality!” YouTuber : Patrick Boyle https://youtu.be/W8HEjee20V0?si=K4gOQv1rH5hrkJX5

Dead on. If anything based on the split road (robo and family tricksters), the M Y L IS essential. If Tesla wants to be in selling cars at all. No family going to take four cyber cabs on 50mi run to grandma. Let alone 1150mi trip. The legacy M 3 and M Y market over next ten years may reduce, replace by 30% of people wanting Robo rides. However not 6-7 passenger business or personal owned vehicles.

He is talking about L variant, Tesla will still sell cars

Tesla is a car maker and a software company, like Mazda, but Mazda makes better cars and the software is better, but in some parts Tesla makes sofware which is also better which makes it hard to say which company is in charge of software and which is better at making cars but in the end they are companies and they make cars and sofware.

As AJ said on Brighter with Herbert, Elon is also saying this to mitigate the Osborne effect (where people stop buying regular model Ys while they wait for a better version). The YL will probably be sold to public in US before the end of next year, but it is not important to Tesla to do so

I can’t wait to not own a tesla and be happy
