As I have said repeatedly, governments, facing mounting debt pressures, are increasingly exploring or implementing taxes on assets as a way to generate revenue without broadly hiking income taxes that could stifle economic growth. This trend is evident in both the Australian example and so many other broader global patterns.

This idea is wild

This Australian proposal is a textbook example, and it's echoed in global shifts toward wealth/property levies amid fiscal crunches. If debt trajectories worsen (e.g., due to recessions or aging populations), expect a shit ton more of such measures.

More and more people from newer, virtual-world-obsessed generations, partially detached from reality, are taking jobs in government. As we grow older, we are likely to see widespread, ridiculous decisions made by policymakers, all with one purpose in mind: how to exploit the middle class and expand the government apparatus.

They supposed to work for us not using and abusing us.

Between this an UNrealized capital gains, people will have HAD ENOUGH.

Reminds me of the windows tax in the UK in the 1700s.

JobberWokker

Sounds like taxing unrealized capital gains.... I've always felt property tax is an example of that, too. I absolutely hate R/E as an investment.

It's taken me till I'm nearly 50 to be able to afford a second bedroom in Sydney, so that I can have friends and guests stay comfortably. Not to mention that having another bedroom usually means more light, airflow, bigger lounge space etc. Looks like as usual I'll have the worst tax scenario on every front as a single person. It's like a punishment for not coupling up and breeding. I look forward to someone inspecting my house to see if the second bedroom is lived in... Bloody ridiculous...

i think the issue is rich people are buying up homes to list on Air BNB and so there are no longer term rentals available at reasonable prices - not sure taxing extra bedrooms is the way to go but they need to figure out a way to reduce income inequality

Almost as sneaking as the top 0.1 % around the world bribing politicians to cut their taxes and financing it with debt. Then saying these tax cuts will pay for themselves and blaming the fiscal crisis on spending lol.
