I debated sharing this, as it is not an uplifting story, but I have witnessed firsthand families torn apart over money, so it is worth sharing - even though it is alarming.

Rising Elder Financial Abuse

Retirement savings have unintentionally fueled a surge in elder financial abuse. This article includes data out of Australia. Common patterns include:

  • Inheritance impatience – adult children pressuring parents to hand over wealth early.

  • Inheritance preservation – family members blocking elderly parents from spending on care.

Some adult children pressure aging parents to hand over money, property, or investments before death (“inheritance impatience”).

This pressure is rising because of high housing costs, inflation, and financial stress.

Common forms of pressure: asking for loans, help buying a house, or funding family businesses. Many of these deals collapse, leaving parents broke.

The DANGER: Parents may lose life savings, their homes, or legal rights if agreements aren’t formalized.

Some Stats:

From one study about 14.8% of adults aged 65 and older living in a community experienced some form of elder abuse in the past year.

The most frequent behaviors included:

  • Pressure to give or loan assets (≈42%)

  • Taking money without consent (≈34%)

  • Failing to contribute to agreed expenses (≈31%)

  • Adult children were the most common perpetrators

Takeaway

Early wealth transfers without strong legal protections can leave older adults financially vulnerable and legally exposed.

I’ve always considered this entitlement culture a bit odd , of course many parents want to leave something to help their children , but I always thought of it as an extra - o needed to make sure I was ok from my own labours , and not dependant on inheritance - and I would gladly give it all away to have mum and dad back

This thing is sooo scarce!

As the devaluation of money continues at an unprecedented pace, younger generations will be pushed to more and more towards dire conditions all the while older generations will hoard more and more wealth while not contributing anything to better the world the future holds. almost a century of these horrible ponzi systems created a gerontocracy and that crushes young generations hope of a better future Although it is despicable to di this to a family member or whoever it is clear that proverb holds true and that much of it will be deserved.. I am 55. My son is 9. I settled down late. This is terrible for these people. Saying that, if my son thinks for one moment of doing this to me, surely that's my fault. I deserve it. I went wrong somewhere.

My very cheap FIL keeps telling us that we're getting "a little something" when he passes as an excuse to skip having any participation in his grandkids, no birthday gifts etc. He and his wife have an 11k monthly pension. IMO, you can keep your money, you would've better spent it when you were alive to be remembered in a positive ✨️

shame on these people - we (my two sisters and I) lost our mum in horrific circumstances that I will attribute to "CareHome malpractice" in 2018 and then Dad in 2023....awful circumstances also....heavily jabbed...Mum and Dad were the only ones in the so called "Care Homes" they ended up in, in Oxford...who were paying their way...they sold the lovely town centre home, we had a garden, trees....they could not manage any longer - never, at one point ever, did we make dad uncomfortable with money talk...yes, we were upset that dad did not "get" the "gift some cash" so it did not all go to the corrupt Govt....but we would never, ever have coerced him into something he would not have been comfortable with....so yes, the govt got most of his hard earned, life savings....the funds from the house sale...us girls got not much....at least we are peaceful....in our hearts....and souls..Dad was Irish....he feared running out of money and ending up in a "shit care home"....I called him every day, checked up on him....the care home would not have got away with much but they surely got away with alot...when mum passed, we wanted to press charges...dad would have none of it....probably good in a way as he ended up in the same care home....RIP mum and dad....

Hope this doesn’t happen to any of my family member as I will be helping fight against it till the end. It’s just heartbreaking to hear people act like this.

People would do well to create financial well-being without considering inheritance or social security
