At first glance, losing the $7,500 federal EV tax credit in September 2025 sounds like bad news. But for Tesla, it’s actually great IMHO - here’s why

Tesla Doesn’t Need Subsidies - They Are Already the Only Carmaker That Can Turn a Profit on EVs - and They Sell the #1 Car on the Planet, the Model Y.

Other carmakers (like Ford and GM) who now dabble in EVs rely on tax credits to hide losses on their EVs. Tesla has been profitable for years without government help. Take away the credit, and Tesla’s strengths stand out more clearly. The others are in hot water. Make that boiling wter.

Tesla is planning the new model 2 aka stripped down Model Y which I hope will be sub-$35k - this could launch in 2 weeks or so. Without the credit, these models will look even more attractive compared to rivals’ higher-priced EVs, the TESLA TAM will explode, and they will achieve even more scale... oh and these cheap cars also drive themselves. Mad to think about.

EV Subsidies distort markets. Glad they are gone.

PS I am still in my Tesla Hedge, I sold a LOT of these yesterday for $21 now $13.

I covered my Tesla covered call for a 39% gain in 24 hours.

Sometimes you want to distort markets. Imagine if Tesla had an EV credit when it IPOed, we would have had sustainable and cheaper energy by now. Tesla's energy business could've been valued at $1 trillion by now, not by 2030. Think of all the energy for AI compute and Bitcoin mining. This is called thinking ahead, like China did with rare-earth metals a decade ago.

I'm not sure we'd have the stripped down model if the subsidies were still present. And I'm a big fan of having it. 🔥

Robinhood doesn’t let us sell calls against leaps.. Sucks!

And simply put the price will just be more attractive for buyers when they compare the cost to buy a non tesla EV… then they should know tesla have the WAY better tech oh and the car drives itself

This was a reply I made to someone further down - but I though it might be of some interest to everyone: keep in mind that Tesla is NOT a car company. It's a tech/AI company. If you are mid/long term investor, the car sales really don't matter. Example: I live in Japan, and visited the UK (my home) last year. I visited my Uncle who is 75. He owns his house, but gets various help from the Scottish government due to his age. And hey! Was I surprised when I went into his house and in his dining room, was a huge Tesla power wall? "How the ..... did you get that!" (Throw in a few Scottish explicatives!) Long story short, it was government provided to help with electric costs and power outages (power can be stored cheaply at off peak hours. This helps the grid as well. So the governments even have big contracts with Tesla.
