P.S. All of my life I've been obsessed w studying military history, and I often apply the principles of military strategy and Sun Tzu’s teachings to investing. Please excuse the strong military undertone — it’s simply how I think about capital and risk.

Rule #87 — Hoard After Victory (Cash Position)

I always trade with the rhythm of the market — the seasons, the cycles, and the harvests.
When conditions are bleak — in the depths of winter — that’s when I deploy. I take calculated, outsized risks when fear dominates and valuations are in the toilet. I thrive in the bear, bottom-fishing when others panic sell. Rem Billions are made in the Bear!

But when my accounts surge, like right now, and the tide turns in my favor, I shift from offense to defense.

The Rule — “Hoard After Victory”

Principle: After significant wins, withdraw a portion of capital from risk.
Cash is not laziness — it is my ammunition.

“After every profitable campaign, I harvest. Cash is the weapon of survival, not an idle asset.”

This mindset allows me to re-enter with full control — never forced, never desperate. I’ve already played extreme hardball with Tesla; now it’s time to rebuild and fortify. This philosophy has served me well: play the cycles, survive the drawdowns, and stay liquid enough to strike when gray or black swans appear.

Case Study — My Tesla Leverage

Earlier this year, I took on an extraordinary risk. Using proceeds from MSTR sales, I leveraged aggressively: for every 100 shares of MSTR sold, I sold 5 Tesla put contracts and bought 5 LEAPS.
It was bold — arguably reckless. Had Tesla collapsed to zero overnight, I would have blown up my account. But it was a calculated offensive move, fueled by my ultra strong conviction in the AI future for Tesla.

Now that the position has delivered outsized returns, it’s time to shift from offense to fortification:

  • Let it cook: The extreme position is established. My focus now is endurance — not expansion. I won’t increase exposure just because the trade is working. It will increase by itself.

  • Harvest: As theta decays and volatility compresses, I’ll take profits from Crypto and resist the urge to roll into fresh risk. Realized gains will be redirected into cash and short-term options perhaps even STRC etc.

  • Rebuild optionality: Hoarding cash is not defensive — it’s strategic. Liquidity restores flexibility and readiness for the next asymmetric opportunity.

Fortification Phase aka Cash Buildup

As my account value has exploded, my cash-to-equity ratio has fallen sharply. My former comfort level of 7% cash has eroded — my liquidity base has not grown with my gains. That imbalance must be corrected. Eg Imagine a $10,000 account with $700 cash, well that account is now $20,000 with $700 cash. That is the problem.

My goal now is fortification: to replenish reserves, restore balance, and ensure that when the next cycle turns — or when the next swan arrives — I’m positioned not as prey, but as a predator.

Final Point

Cash is the blood of opportunity.
Victory is not the time to advance — it’s the time to reload.

Already bought my castle when BTC reached 100k, still taking profits to pay off debt and lifestyle chips. Profit taking Model in place. Thank you IA. I wouldn't have done it without your tools and videos. To others: stop waiting for tops. Take profits now if you haven't.

Excellent strategy and thoughts as always. Thank you for sharing, James 🙏👍🙏

Words of wisdom. Thanks James. All you do for people is making you good karma.

I appreciate the advice. I'm in BTC, SOL, and TSLA too, but I don't think I will take profits until later. They're my biggest bags and all three appear poised to continue to move up in 2026. Instead, I'm riding the ranges of turbulent stocks, taking profit, and building a bag of cash for the next Bear Market. I am advising my kids to continue to buy TSLA when/if it moves into the low $400's because they have very few shares and the opportunity to wait 5-8 years to maximize their return.

Thanks for sharing, James. But how do you square this with your constant refrain that cash is a melting iceberg? When do you feel the itch to reinvest? Do you keep some in a deflationary currency? Or do you still trust the almighty dollar? I like the adapted military rules, but how do they play out with fiat?

I think it takes a lot of planing and discipline to sit on cash from the bear. Like James says money is made in the bear. After years of staying all in, I have finally learned to take some profit and store ammo for a bad day. It’s hard becaue it always seems like things will go up forever! Oddly enough the hardest part of trading is taking profits

Love this.. I'm a huge fan of the "Art of War". Applicable to so many facets of life.

How does this align with the "Retire on...." strategy? For example the retire on nnnn $SOL? It has to be left on the table or does this dovetail with the retire on, sell high buy back cheaper?

I just joined Patreon today and reading this reminds me of my own comment that I submitted as part of the join up process...If only my prior self was wiser, more experienced I would have taken my profits from last November (2024) and kept them for a good dip buying opportunity like the one we had on Oct 10th - instead I jumped into a hot market that slowly had me selling positions at a loss all year - simple to see in hindsight and I have learnt alot from this last year about my lack of patience, my emotional stupidity and what todo next time round. I live your post, it confirms my own thoughts on how to manage profit. Im quite dissapointed in myself, I made £6k in 20 days and have slowly traded it away, recklessly and almost as if I had no respect for it! well now im humbled. I haven't lost any initial capital so I'll survive but I could have been in a great position for this market dip or even better that one in August, instead I was bought in a prices that were clearly too high. Oh well, we live on...no crying in the casino!!

So where do you put your cash to work while holding cash James?
