NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang commented on OpenAI’s new partnership with AMD, NVIDIA’s main AI chip rival. OpenAI will start using AMD’s Instinct chips to reduce its reliance on NVIDIA, and in return, AMD is offering OpenAI up to a 10% ownership stake — a bold and risky move meant to attract major customers.

Huang called the deal “unique and surprising,” noting that AMD is giving away equity before its next-gen chips have proven themselves. He also emphasized that NVIDIA’s true strength isn’t just hardware, but its powerful software ecosystem (CUDA), which keeps developers loyal and competitors at a disadvantage. He also said AMD could give away chips for free but it does not mean tehy will ever add any value! Weird words.

Overall, the deal highlights AMD’s attempt to challenge NVIDIA’s dominance in AI chips — a high-stakes bet that could either pay off big or backfire. Jensen seems confident he will be fine.

AMD will do fine at least in the intermediate term. But NVDA is so far ahead, their lapping most others. That may change in the future, but I think it will be pretty far ahead of where we are now. This seems desperate, imho.

Competition is a good thing, even as a distant second AMD will help keep the pressure on and help avoid complacency, IMO it's very positive.

Jensen must not like his cousin, Lisa, very much. Harsh! But isn’t that weird and wild….the two CEO’s for NVDA and AMD are cousins!!!

Man, that's crazy! I just had to Google that and yes you're right.

“Unique and surprising” I’m gonna have to steal that. Diplomatic CEO talk for “well bless their hearts” 😆

His point on, "even if his competitors gave their chips away for free," was that power is the bottleneck, not chip cost. Nvidia’s systems (like Blackwell) are far more efficient—up to 30x more performance per watt than their competitors. That means 30x more revenue from the same unit of power. Here's the point... OPPORTUNITY COST OUTWEIGHS SAVINGS. Even if a competitor gave their chips for free, using them would mean giving up MASSIVE revenue potential. So the only rational choice is to use the most efficient chips to get the best return on that investment.

Lets see what Lisa has to say, given she knows Jensen very well and for a long time.

What in the right mind AMD (Lisa Su) gives away 10% stake of the company for ONE PENNY, yes 1 cent/share.? WHY? 1 cent is same as freebie. Why not 50%, 60 or 75% off not 99.99% discount. INSANE

Seems like Jensen feels threatened by the partnership
