This is my theory: when the ETFs were launched, they looked at on-chain activity and whale movements, and also listened to some anecdotal evidence that people felt more secure. Well, we're here.

"After you’ve made serious money, it’s no longer about getting more — it’s about keeping what you’ve got." IA 2025

Back in 2024, I had a theory that Bitcoin whales — the biggest holders — would start moving their Bitcoin from personal cold storage into ETFs. The main reason: security and inheritance. Managing huge Bitcoin wallets personally is risky — one wrench attack or lost key can destroy a fortune. ETFs solve that by putting the Bitcoin in professional custody under strict regulation, so family wealth can be safely passed down.

I recognized this trend early because I faced the same issue in 2022. I wanted exposure to Bitcoin in the bear market but didn’t want the security risk of holding it directly. So I used MicroStrategy stock options instead — not only for extreme leverage but also a way to benefit from Bitcoin’s upside without worrying about self-custody.

This article shows exactly that happening: whales converting billions in Bitcoin into ETF shares for tax efficiency, security, and institutional access. This “ETF migration” is locking up Bitcoin supply, which could push the price higher — possibly to $140K by mid-2026. It’s not whales selling Bitcoin; it’s them securing it smarter, which tightens supply and drives prices up.

Again it seems like the ETFs and saylor locking up so much bitcoin no more massive draw downs for bitcoin regardless of the crypto market dynamics?

Very interesting! The article focusses on in-kind contributions to ETFs: I'm curious if some of the large recent sellers are going to cash first before getting trad-fi exposure to Bitcoin. This could help explain why there has been substantial selling but the price has been range bound.
