If Governor Ron DeSantis succeeds in putting a plan on the ballot to end property taxes for Florida homeowners, the state’s real estate market could boom. People would own their homes without paying property taxes, making it much cheaper to live there and even more attractive to buyers escaping high-tax states.

This could cause a big wave of people moving from places like New York City, where socialism is taking hold and property taxes are about 1.7% of a home’s value and could go higher. There could be a massive exodus for the wealthy and that coudl trigger a surge in demand could send Florida home prices soaring because there wouldn’t be enough supply.

We already saw people moving south during the pandemic. Ending property taxes could make that trend explode, turning Florida into a top spot for people tired of paying high taxes—while the state makes up for lost revenue by taxing tourists and non-residents through sales and other fees.

Unfortunately Florida home insurance makes up for any savings they would see since it has increased 300 to 500% in the past few years for a lot of people across the state.

Clueless

Nobody likes to pay property taxes. Currently they don't have a state income tax. Governments will have to get the money from somewhere. Home insurance is outrageously expensive. There are a lot of scammy home insurance companies in Florida. Several of the big insurance companies don't want to bother, all based on potential costs. Sounds good no property taxes. Interesting to see how it will play out.
