Tbh you should watch episode 1 of the originals once you start season 5 of vampire diaries because they aired during the same time. Some stuff from season 5 is actually mentioned in season 1 of the originals. It would just make more sense to do 5x01 then 1x01 and so on.

see the difference between stelena and delena is that the writers tried to suggest that stelena had the most perfect relationship that one could ever have which was not actually the case. Under the surface when you analyze their relationship it was pretty unhealthy bc of all the issues they had that weren't acknowledged and were brushed aside. Stefan lied to elena a lot especially in season 1, he had emotionally manipulated her on occasion like in 1x19, he also abused her twice, he stalked her for months before they officially got together even to the point where he enrolled himself into her high school to try and get close with her which is pretty creepy yet was romantized on the show. These issues that they had just never came to the surface which is why they never grew as a couple. Another thing was they had horrible communication with each other. In season 2 they had to fake a fight to throw Katherine off into believing they were breaking up. Elena used that fake fight to bring up her insecurities about Katherine. "Did Stefan think that he could use me to replace her?" (1x11) Elena had these insecurities in 1x11 but it was brushed off and stelena never talked about it, but those feelings re-emerged when Katherine came back and again instead of having a real conversation about it, Elena used a fake fight to talk about how she was feeling while knowing Stefan wouldn't think its real. These lies and secrets and not being able to tell each other how they felt in a real open conversation is a big reason why stelena was never healthy. And that's the difference bc from day one delena have always been able to tell each other everything, they never hold back from each other and when delena have issues which they do have a lot they always talk about it and try to fix it and its never brushed aside. And that's how delena grow as a couple and become stronger.
