Ian Somerhalder (the actor of Damon) really loved selfish Damon. In interviews he said he hated when Damon got soft and missed that reckless Damon from season 1. So after Elena left, he urged the writer (Julie Plec) to sort of bring Damon's roots back to his old selfish ways like he was in season 1. I think thats kind of why we don't see development in his character and I think it sucks as well, Juli.

just fyi: the actress who plays Caroline - Candice King - went on maternity leave, which is why she wasn’t in the last few episodes and why you haven’t seen her life with Rick and the kids as much.

I´ m gonna start this off by saying Damon is my favorite character and I love him to death but I get where Stefan´s coming from. He has a point in this episode. Yes, Damon has said many times before that he doesn´ t care but he´ s never said it like he actually means it. It always felt like he just said that as a defense mechanism. And this time Stefan actually wanted to know for sure. He cares so much about his brother and he wants him to care. Like he said doing the decent thing is his instinct, it´ s almost all of our instincts. But Damon doesn´ t have that. He doesn´ t care about people but most importantly he doesn´ t really care about his brother and that is what Damon told him in that moment. It hurts to actually hear it.

I didn’t understand it like that. For me, Stefan knows that Damon is selfless when it comes to him or Elena, but he wanted to know if he honestly doesn’t care about anyone else and Damon said he didn’t. also Stefan continually gets himself into trouble to save Damon and then blames Damon for it. that was why he got marked in the first place. it’s in his nature to save people, but it’s not in Damon’s. Juli was right - they need to learn to finally accept each other for all that they are, even their differences.

I think the Stefan & Damon phone scene was very beautiful. I agree with you that I've had enough of the constantly pointing out that Damon is selfish. I mean we as a audience know it, the other characters know it, and Damon himself has said it practically hundreds of times.

Man sitting through the Stefan hate (I know you don’t actually hate him) these past two episodes has been hard for me lmao. But amazing reaction otherwise! I loved the Stefan/Damon scenes and I’ve always wanted more defan scene in tvd and it’s sad they waited until Elena left to really focus on the brothers relationship.

I'm sorry if it looked like I was hating on Stefan. After reading so many comments I realize that my problem is not Stefan, is the way they are writing him. Stefan has grown so much during this 7 seasons that reducing him to just "the good brother" annoys me so much bc he is so much more than that. He is a complex, well developed character, with many grey areas that have been wonderful to discover during this past 7 seasons. And yeah, he loves Damon sm but I sometimes wish he was a little bit more selfish so he can get the happy ending he deserves!
