Deer Shed Festival + A conversation with Ann Annie (Patreon)
Content
Hello hello! How's it going? All well I hope.
Here's a new video for today which is a conversation with Ann Annie I had back on my West Coast Adventure, this was filmed just before the live Velocity performance I shared last week. Full video details below.
This past weekend I've been at Deer Shed Festival alongside Mylar Melodies and Soundgas working in the Science Tent providing music making sessions for kids. I say kids, plenty of adults came along to play too but as the festival is a family friendly affair lots of kids come up and jam.
My job for the festival this was to get into programming classic 808 beats and we had plenty of these on 'beat sheets' (spreadsheet notated beats, simplified to one bar to make it easy). We had Voodoo Ray, Cybertron, Marvin Gaye, Beastie Boys, Planet Rock ... the classics!
SIDE NOTE - if anyone wants these beat sheets let me know.
Usually I bring my own gear and both Mylar Melodies and myself bring a modular rig laid out like a live performance case so performing transitions, muting beats and filtering is all easily to hand to play with. But this year I was using the organisers gear which included the TR8 boutique unit from Roland. It sounded great! Totally on point as an 808 as you'd expect and while mini in size it was nicely playable and programmable and good fun all weekend. To accompany I started with the Tomkat Super Day Dreamer delay pedal which is fantastic! You want a classic analogue style delay sound and that just does it wonderfully. Plus there's bonus modulation, tap tempo and nice splashy reverb.
The Arturia Microbrute provided some acidic growly bass action to go with the TR8 (triggered by the Trigger out on the TR8) and I had the Earthquaker Devices Transmissor, a Danelectro Peanut Butter & Jelly delay and an Ibanez Flanger for some added FX.
Alongside programming classic beats I had a couple unloved vintage drum machines (the preset rhythm based RX120 and bugger to program RX7 from Yamaha) as well a Casio SK-1 for people to play on.
All in Deer Shed was a fantastic weekend, nice to see mr Melodies and the Soundgas team again (they had 7 Space Echos! plus lots of other goodies) but for now I'll be getting back to work on some new videos, having a big tidy and some set up changes of the studio and preparing for Modular Meets Leeds!
I'll do a bit of a picture dump on Discord from this weekend and don't forget THIS THURSDAY WE REVEAL A NEW MODULE!
All the best!

As part of DivKid's West Coast Adventure back in 2019 I got the chance to go and visit Ann Annie out in Portland Oregon, USA. We caught up with a casual conversation about what they were doing, where they're going and ideas for the future.
This came right before the performance at the event Velocity and you can watch the full Ann Annie performance right here - https://youtu.be/0-QewuO-T1I
