Thank you for the Family Tree Maker. I recently came across a need to do something along these lines and thought that Randy might have done something like this. Low and behold you had, great news. Bad news is I can get it to work. When I select a family member to move onto the Family Tree chart, I get a message box saying “Plase make sure to move the family member onto the family tree”, and the move fails. If I step through the macro, I can move the member before it checks the position of the shape, and it works. So what I need to know is how to programmably allow enough time to make the move? I am also having a problem deleting a member who is already on the chart, but my guess is that solving the above will solve this.

Excel For Freelancers

HI Mike, thanks for your comment and question. This makes perfect sense. In any of my Drag & Drop Training I add a counter such as Dim Counter as long For Counter = 1 to 100000 DoEvents 'Your Code here Next Counter The DoEvents allows you to do other things while the code is running, and this essentially ads a counter (or a certain amount of time) until the operation completes> I share an example of this in the Patreon Update of the Calendar Training here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/ultimate-update-89800221 I hope this helps and thanks so much.

Thanks for the quick response. I saw the counter and DoEvents, but the testing for “Incorrect Move” is within this loop, so there is really no time to make the move and the .left of the shape will always be that of its original position in column E, which is out of bounds. In the Calendar template you capture the original position of the shape to determine if it has moved, then test if it is a legal move. Unfortunately, I am not advanced enough to apply that to the Family Tree template.

Hi Mike, thanks so much for the comment. I have a training coming up in a week called 'Tree View control' in which may be easier to apply a family tree. I will be using it for Customers, Order Types & Invoices, and Items, however, you can use this for a family tree as well. I think its much more natural way of demonstrating relationships then the training above. I hope this helps and thanks so much.

How do we delete the family member(s) and clear the family to start our own new family tree?

Excel For Freelancers

Hi Jan, you can just delete the row from the database or you could add in a macro to do that simply by assigning a row and then using something like .Ranges(MembRow & ":" & MembRow).entireRow.Delete And then running the macro that refreshes the schedule. I hope this helps and thanks so much.
