GardeninTool

It was a "mere" 26 episodes 😭

Zach Harding

Samurai Champloo would be a really fun replacement! I mentioned last night in the stream but it's the same director for this, Samurai Champloo, Carole and Tuesday and Kids on the Slope!

Makotheq60

Trigun or baki the grappler would be a great replacement

Jet Man

Lazarus While this show hasn't aired yet, it will do so in a couple days. It is from the same director as Cowboy Bebop and people are already drawing comparisons to it based on promotional material. Even the opening sequence has a visual style similar to Bebop's opening while jazz music is playing. Samurai Champloo still probably makes more sense as a follow up, but this is at least something worth considering. That aside, it has been a wonderful experience going along this journey with you. See you space cowboy.

Alejandro Pupo

Samurai Champloo is the next show by the same director. Really strong series and my personal favorite from him. Old school samurai action show with episodic nature like this one except emphasis on a more hip-hop like ost. Birthed the genre Lofi hip-hop with it's composer Nujabes

Alanin_8💜

Lazarus is coming out soon! Same director as Cowboy Bebop

Eli L.

I think the new Lazarus looks promising based on the trailers and people involved (Watanabe as director, John Wick director Chad Stahelski as action choreographer, jazz musician Kamasi Washington performing the opening, etc.)

Zach Harding

It didn't quite birth the genre, but Nujabes was hugely influential in the genre and is considered amongst the early pioneers of the genre. There were other influential artists as well like J Dilla, Nujabes is just the best well known.

xAstaWKx

“You’re gonna carry that weight” is such an iconic line to end on.

Niklas Neumann

1. Good follow up is Samurai Champloo 2. Dont watch the live action, if you value your time. 3. The official genres are "Action, Science Fiction, Space Western, Comedy" but i would just put it in the "goat gerne" since it is in my top 10

Alejandro Pupo

No definitely I mostly meant in terms of really popularizing that style of music Nujabes work on that show really made it explode in terms of popularity.

PlatypusPrince

Little fun fact: Steve Blum the VA for Spike has the Audio Waveform for Spike’s last word “Bang” as a tattoo on his arm.

Avalon

Yeah as everyone’s saying Lazarus is coming out soon and guaranteed to be a banger, but if you want something that is for sure in this same style samurai champloo is the go-to

IRG7

+1 for Samurai Champloo

Belac

Jet was unburdened by his heavy past, whether he got closure or not, he still lived the same. Faye couldn't remember her past and so she lived like her future didn't matter. When she finally remembered it she realized she had nothing to return to and started cherishing the life the had a little too late. Spike was stuck chasing his past life. Even when he has a chance to escape with Julia and live a new life. he went back for weapons and died with the same baggage he started the series with. All 3 of them delt with the past and "carried that weight" in such different ways, but we're all burdened by them. Ed and Ein were the only ones who weren't bound by there past, which is why their send off was so open ended.

Esthefano Sebastián

Samurai Champloo is amazing and has a similar structure. That's definitely my recomendation.

Hermit

I really hope there will be more shows directed by Watanabe on the Patreon. They all share a special touch

Joseph Charlie

Neon genesis evangelion it’s another 90s anime, I think the story is really good too

Blood Of Mine

I remember feeling this way when I first watched it back in the early 2001 on Adult Swim. I think it was the first anime they had aired.

GradMustang

I think I was like 12 when I first watched this and it was probably the most mature animated media I watched at the time. Holds up very well after a quarter century. Loved your reactions and rewatching it with you. Thanks.

I think Spike chose to stay and fight instead of escaping with Julia, not because he was tied to his past and wanted to settle the score with Vicious, but because he wanted to save the Bebop crew. After seeing that the syndicate killed Annie to get to him, he knew that Jet and Faye weren’t safe either. So, he had to fight. Julia dies, so he returns to the ship and tells Jet the story of the striped cat who died right after his lover passed away. However, in his conversation with Faye, he says that he's not going to Vicious to die, but to find out if he's truly alive. They were all in danger, and the only way for Spike and the others to continue living was to kill Vicious, who was the one actually stuck in the past chasing Spike and Julia.

GradMustang

If you want a bit of a pallet cleanser after Bebop and don't mind a show about adolescence there is FLCL (FOOLY COOLY). It's short 6 episode show that came out in 2000. I liked the music and action. If you ever watch this, do it in English.

Mister Smirk

I think it's left ambiguous, the director said it playfully, he may be dead or he may be alive

Xoulium

Didn't vote on the previous episode since I just assumed it'd be done on the final one, so I'm leaving my suggestion here: Berserk 1997

Avalon

Oh by the way the man who wrote and directed the show said himself he doesn’t know if spike is alive or dead.

TheGoblerTrainsMovinIn

Lazarus, It's starting soon and made by the same dude who made this, so probably a safe bet

Derek

Such a great show. For the next series, maybe you'd like Baccano

Isaac Noël

I second this! Studio Mappa is behind it so you know it's gonna be gorgeous

Trowa

Some of the suggestions are so good in comments. Samurai Champloo if you wanna stick to the same director. Lazarus as well. But i do love 1997 Berserk (Despite everything coming after it being questionable in quality) and also love the Baccano suggestion. If you have an itch for mafia stories 91 Days and Gungrave are good.

Dan

Lazarus might be a good follow-up to this. Directed by the director of Cowboy Bebop and Studio MAPPA ( Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man) and given the composers in tow, it is likely to have a jazzy OST.

Harvey

I second watching some live actions even if only to laugh at them sometimes, i personally don't know whether the Bebop one is any good

Sprucefer

I'd recommend Trigun. Probably the original Trigun (1998), but Trigun Stampede (2023) is also very good imo

Unbeknownst Man

Obvious suggestion after this show would be Samurai Champlo. I also recommend Kaiji, as I told you while you were watching Squid Game, the creator drew inspiration from the series. And if you want to maintain the more "mature vibes" going, I'd add Parasyte: the Maxim.

ScaringCrows

The genre is "A certified classic"

Red Menace

its not. Not in the sense of "they didn't try" but the big problem when you translate something from an animated medium, regardless of where the animation is from, to a live action one is.. well people just don't act like that, when its moving drawing you can suspend your disbelief much easier, but when you see real, flesh and blood people behaving like, the kid, well then it gets harder to stand and tolerate, though the production people did try, they clearly cared, so its not a disaster.

Walt D

Yes. Blue gave the ending so much structure and power.
